“Shit, man, that blows,” Eddie says, slapping a hand on my back. “You’ll find something else for sure. You’re a good writer.”

“Thanks,” I say, pulling out my phone to take a few photos. I put the duckie on the seat back in front of me and line up, but a loud crack of the bat hitting the ball sounds, and I follow its path into left field.Come oooon, I think, watching Brendan running for it, but it’s moving high toward the seats. Just before it sails over him, he leaps, pushing off the wall with one foot to propel him higher, arm stretched above his head.

I click my phone over and over, with no clue if I have anything in focus, but sure he would want to see that jump because it was unreal. He lands on the ground, a wide smile on his face as he grabs the ball from his glove and tosses it back to the pitcher.

The writers all cheer, and half the players do, too. I know we’re supposed to be rivals outside of the hotel room, but I can’t stop myself, and I hoot and holler along with them.

“Way to go, woo hoo,” I cheer. The coach claps from the dugout. In a real game, it would have been the kind of catch that had the whole crowd on their feet. Maybe before they replace him, he’ll get the chance to do it again.

They run through a few dances and record a few short videos, then head inside early. The deal made withHypedhas half the players performing tonight, and they need to get over there early to rehearse on the small stage they have there.

“That was good of you,” Rob says as we follow the team inside. “Cheering for him despite… well, you know.”

“It was a good catch,” I say, trying to sound like I don’t care.

“You coming to this thing tonight?”

“TheHypedthing?”

He nods. “We’re all going. Was going to ask you and Brendan at breakfast, but you didn’t come.”

I rub the back of my neck with my hand.

“Yeah, I was kind of having it out with my boss on the phone.”

“Whatever happens, kid, you’ll be alright.”

I’ve never wanted a statement to be more true than the one he just made. I worked so hard to get here. To write about real sports and the thought of giving that all up has my stomach in knots. But I couldn’t continue to work for him and expect to look myself in the eye, or Brendan.

Brendan has hardly glanced my way since this morning. I don’t want him to look at me either. I don’t want to bring him down. While my professional life is falling apart, everything is going great for him. He should get to enjoy it. At least it’s just my professional life in shambles. My personal life, well, let’s just say that my night with him has ruined me for other men.

“So, you going to come?” Rob asks.

“I guess I can come for a little bit.”

“Good. Be down at reception by seven.”

When I get into the locker room, Brendan’s not there. I would check the showers but that would look like I was trying to creep on the players, so I hit up Harrison, who’s already dressed and about ready to head out.

“Have you seen him?” I ask, and he frowns.

“You two okay?”

“We’re good,” I say, but his frown remains only now it’s joined by one raised eyebrow. Brendan sat with Harrison the whole way back from the art thing, he must have told him something. “We sorted it out last night, swear, we’re good now. Better than good. Great even,” I say, the blush rising to my cheeks as the memory of having my cock buried deep inside him fills my mind.

“He got called in by coach and headed into his office a few minutes ago.”

“Do you know why?”

He shakes his head.

“Maybe they don’t need him to play with you guys anymore, you haven’t had any really tricky stunts in a while.”

“That would suck. Brendan’s slotted in good.”

“That catch today was epic.”

“Hell yeah, all it needed was that little spin and hip-roll dance move he does at the end, and it could have been a top-performing video on our socials.”
