His lips turn up in an elated grin as his cheeks heat, a reaction that causes a few butterflies to flutter around my stomach. But it’s still so different from the swarm that Elliot releases.

“Great,” he beams. “I’ll be counting down the days until I get back to Texas.”

“Cool,” I reply in an unconvincing, awkward tone.

Cool.

What the fuck, Roxy? Could you be more cringey? My comment doesn't seem to faze him, though. I can do no wrong in his eyes, which is kind of a turn-off.

What is it that women always want a good guy, but when you finally meet one, you get the ick? Like why do assholes seem to be the only men who do it for me? Maybe I need to invest in therapy.

“Can I get your number?” he asks, digging his phone from his suit jacket. “That way I can text you about the details.”

I stare down at his phone, the bright screen blinding me in the dark nightclub. I can’t help but feel no emotional connection…Like this is some kind of business transaction. But I have to at least give this a try.

“Sure,” I smile before grabbing his phone and typing in my number.

“That was easier than I thought it would be,” he drawls, arching a brow.

“Are you calling me easy, Zach?” I taunt as my lips tilt up in a smirk.

“Have you seen yourself, Roxy?” he scoffs. “The first time I laid eyes on you, I knew you would be anythingbuteasy. But I was willing to shoot my shot.” He flashes me a cocky wink.

Roxy.

I don’t hear anything he says after that because my mind is somewhere else. It’s with someone else. Someone who calls me Roxanne instead of Roxy.

Hours later,I’m sitting in the back of an Uber with Evie who, by the way, is drunk off her ass. Intoxicated with a mixture of alcohol and young love.

I told her she could go home with her man, but she refused to let me leave alone after we had both been drinking so much. So basically, she’s even a saint when she’s drunk.

“Tonight wassooooomuch fun,” she slurs from beside me, her breath smelling of coconut rum.

“It really was,” I agree, resting my head on top of hers. “Thanks for inviting me, Evie.”

“Thank you for coming,” she chirps. “It’s fun to have another girl to go out with. The banking industry has too many men.”

She scrunches up her nose and sticks her tongue out.

“Are you saying you want to take me out on a date?” I joke, playfully nudging her shoulder.

“Hmmm,” she hums, tapping her pointer fingeragainst her chin. “I probably should check withZacharyfirst before answering that,” she snickers.

“Zachary,” I mock, arching a brow. “Wow, so formal.”

“Seriously, though,” she chuckles. “He couldn't take his eyes off of you all night. It was kind of sweet but also a little creepy.”

A beat of silence passes as we both turn our heads to stare at each other before bursting out laughing. We toss our heads back, our bellies bouncing up and down as we cackle hysterically.

“Oh my God,” I say, trying to catch my breath. “Okay, I thought it was a little fucking weird too. But also, it felt good to feel wanted.”

“Oh, shut up,” she tosses a hand in the air. “Stop acting like you don’t know that every guy wants you.”

I almost ask her if she thinks Elliot is one of those guys, but thankfully, I’m not drunk enough for that. But the question is on the tip of my tongue.

I wish my mind would stop straying to Elliot every time I think about Zach.

“So…What did you two talk about?”
