“It’s a work trip,” he says flatly. “You can take vacation on your own time.”

I give him a sarcastic thumbs-up.

“So, when is this non-vacation?” I ask, leaning back in my chair.

“We leave on Friday at one,” he replies. “Well, that’s when our flight departs. So we need to be at the airport at least an hour and a half before.

“Oh, like next Friday?” I ask as my heart pounds against my chest.

There’s no way I can go this Friday. I have my date with Zach. He already has the whole night planned out. I can’t just cancel on him last minute.

“This Friday,” he clarifies.

No.

No, no, no. You’ve got to be kidding me.

“Elliot, that’s in two days.”

“I’m well aware of what day it is, Roxanne,” he replies smugly.

“You’re giving me two days to prepare for a trip across the country?”

“Welcome to the corporate world,” he retorts. “When business calls, especially a multi-million dollar client, we drop everything and go. So yes, two days should be plenty of time to pack your bags and prepare for the trip.”

“I can’t go,” I shake my head.

“Like hell you can’t,” he clips.

“I’m serious, Elliot,” I snap. “I’m not going. I have plans on Friday. Plans that I can’t cancel.”

He flashes me a devious glance before his lips turn up in a shit-eating grin.

Oh my God.

He knows. He fucking knows. He did this on purpose. He planned this out perfectly, so wouldn't be able to go out with Zach.

This motherfucker. This motherfucking motherfucker.

“You aresuchan asshole,” I seethe through gritted teeth. I feel my cheeks heat with rage.

“Because I’m asking you to go on a business trip?”

“No,” I hiss. “Because you know about my plans for Friday night. Somehow, you found out about the date. And this is your way of making sure it doesn't happen.”

He smirks, shrugging his shoulders like the liar that he is.

“Actually, this is the first I’m hearing of your little date,” he says, lying through his teeth. “But I must admit, thisisperfect timing for me.”

I hate him. I hate him so much.

“I’m not going,” I mutter through gritted teeth.

“Yes, you are,” he says calmly.

“No, I’m not,” I repeat. “I will call in sick. There’s nothing you can do about that.”

“Then I guess you’ll be missing out on a significant pay increase,” he shrugs.
