“Even with the jewels.”

There’s a brief, and to me, telling pause.

“Even,” says Maximo, “with the jewels. They bring more power, like you say, but we can’t have empty seats. Ivan and Declan are already drumming up replacements, so your candidate needs to be here soon.”

“He will be.”

Jac cuts a look at me.

“Part of the plan,” I say, so low I’m not sure Jac hears me.

“Better be,” he mutters, “because I don’t want to be here long.”

“Did Maximo secure your cuffs?”

“He did.” His eyes narrow.

“Good.”

Then the foot comes down a little further.

“Kincaid?” Maximo asks.

The person—Kincaid—stops his descent yet again. “Yes?”

“Agnossio and Miller?”

“I’ll kill them.”

“No.” Maximo’s voice is ice. “You won’t. We will. You’re not Quinate yet. And if you kill them before your induction, you won’t be in. Let me know when your candidate arrives. We’ll return.”

“This,” Jac says, loud, “is bullshit.”

He’s fucking right, it is. And the fact that Kincaid buys it would be hilarious if Cat wasn’t involved.

Shit.

I shove her from my head as much as I can while I slide the handcuff open on my right wrist. Maximo didn’t lock them on one wrist, and I want to be ready for anything.

For a gun runner, Kincaid and his goons didn’t check us very well. I’ve still got a knife and a gun, both on my ankles. And Jac…he’s armed, too.

Jesus, the fuck Kincaid didn’t even question us turning up without protection. Sometimes we make it known, other times not, but any situation that’s possibly dangerous…no good mafia king goes in without something.

“Do you think…?” Jac doesn’t finish. He doesn’t have to.

Cat. Do I think Cat’s okay. Do I think she finally did the smart thing and went back to the apartment, took the choker and tiara, and ran with whatever else she could?

“Fuck if I know.”

She’s unpredictable.

But at least she has no idea of our plan. Or where this is.

And if they ask her for the jewels, I hope she fucking leaves them somewhere. There’s a whole plan set up to fall into place like dominos, just to keep her safe. Out of trouble. From her arm band to Ben the driver to the Quinate themselves.

She’ll be fine.

This should be over soon.
