“Write-off?Is there a deity IRS?” I laugh. “You actually have human money so I won’t have to run out of here to skip the bill, or get left behind to scrub dishes?”

“I have plenty of money. Order whatever you want.” Eros waves at my menu.

“I’m glad I don’t have to dine and dash since I don’t think I can run in these heels, because I can barely walk in them.”

His eyes widen in surprise as Eros looks up at me. “You don’t wear heels? Sorry, I just thought they would look fantastic with the dress.”

“They do.” I sigh. “But I’m not comfortable wearing them since I never wear any footwear with a three-inch heel. Actually, I never dress up. Even for my fancy gigs, I wear pants and flats so I can run and move around comfortably.”

“What is it that you do?” he asks.

“I thought you were a god.” I raise an eyebrow. “You said you knew enough about me when we were at the hotel. Don’t you already know?”

“Nope.” He grins at my disbelieving scoff.

I’m not sure if he is lying or not. Either way, he wants me to explain. “Wait, you said you would be my assistant tomorrow. What did you think you were going to do?”

“Whatever you asked me to do,” he deflects.

“Let me ask you this. Does the camera gear give you any clues?”

“Dee, this is the part where we get to know each other,” he says, his voice weary. “I ask you questions, you ask me questions…”

Unperturbed, I ask, “Why?”

“For our mock date. I would like to hear more about howyousee yourself.”

“Mock date… for my training?” I scan the room again to see if anyone is listening. “Whatismy job going to be?”

“A matchmaker helps people find true mates. It’s a bit more complicated than a regular cupid.”

“A regular cupid?” I ask.

Before Eros can answer, a server comes over to tell us the specials and take our drink order. He’s a tall, slender man with a look about him that screams he’s going to judge all my choices and table manners. Well, he’s in for a treat with me.

Eros looks at me and asks, “Do you enjoy red wine?”

After I nod, he says to the server, “We will have your most expensive bottle. We’re celebrating.”

“May I ask what you are celebrating?” the polished server asks with a grin at me.

“This beautiful woman has agreed to be my life partner.”

If I were drinking something right now, I would have done a legitimate spit take. As it is, I choke on my own spit.Life partner? That sounds like we aretogether, together, but then the other reality hits me. I’m an indentured servant to Eros for the rest of my life, however long I last.

The server notices my surprised reaction and how the color drains from my face.

Eros explains, “She wasn’t expecting me to announce anything yet.”

“Congratulations, sir.” The server bows. “I will bring out your wine, and you can look over your dinner options. I will be back in a moment.”

I feel Eros’s eyes on me while I pretend to study the menu. I’ve already picked out what I’m going to order.

“I was hoping you would take this better,” he says, a bit of sadness coloring his voice.

“Take what better?” I dare to stare him in the eye. “That I was destined to die just when I was getting my life together? Being caught midair by a winged love god? That an angel of death and an agent of karma argued over my fate? Being coerced into servitude? Having a god playing games with me?”

“When you put it like that…” Eros frowns, and he still looks good doing it. Bastard. “But what game am I playing?”
