As soon as Eros popped into the bathroom, though, I couldn’t feel the presence anymore.

“It’s gone. I think. If anything was even here.” My voice is quiet, feeling silly that I called him for no reason.

Eros glances down at me in the tub, but not in a perverted way, more as if he wants to make sure I am still there, and I’m okay. His gaze finally drops from my face to my chest. His lips twitch with humor at my attempt to cover my ample breasts with my small hands, then he turns away. “Sorry. I can’t leave you alone.”

“Yes, you can.” I huff. “Get out.”

Reluctantly, he disappears in a blink of an eye.

I pull the drain, quickly dry off, and get dressed in the silky pajamas that Eros somehow procured for me.

It’s late, and Eros is already in bed, same as the night before. I crawl in on the other side and curl up, facing away from him on the edge of the bed again. I need to get out of this arrangement. I’m not cut out to be a matchmaker. I can’t handle a god shadowing my every move.

I close my eyes and fall asleep.

A hiss of voices wakes me up, but I don’t move. Two men argue at the foot of the bed. Eros and another tall man face off as if their argument might come to blows at any second. In the dim light, his hair appears blond like Eros’s, but long and straight, falling to mid-back. He’s thicker than Eros and a couple of inches taller than him—so maybe six-six. He’s a giant, and his muscular arms are thicker than my thighs. I’m guessing he’s another god. Is he the one watching me in the bathroom?

“Back off, Herm,” Eros growls. “I don’t need you to remind me of what will happen if I fail.”

“You don’t have long.” He sounds wickedly gleeful about it.

“Leave me be until then.” Eros steps toward Herm threateningly.

Herm grunts, gives a lingering glance in my direction, and disappears.

Did he see my eyes were cracked open to watch them?

Herm?It must have been Hermes. He is the messenger god, along with a bunch of other stuff I can’t recall right now. What needs to happen soon?

What happens to Eros if he fails? Fails what?

The bed shifts as Eros pops back in beside me. I feel tension whirling in him, and he doesn’t fall asleep right away. It’s strange that I sense him clearer than anyone else in my life. Perhaps it has something to do with accepting his job offer.

I finally fall asleep but it’s restless as I wonder what will happen to Eros and me when his time is up.

CAR RIDE

“Breakfast?” Eros asks as I roll out of bed. His muscular arms are crossed behind his head as he watches my every move.

I didn’t sleep well last night after our visit from Hermes, so an energy bar probably won’t cut it for the long drive home.

“Sure.” I get dressed in a soft tee and jeans and pack up my things.

Eros helps me load my car while I check out of the hotel.

I hand over the keys to the room and make sure my clients have paid for it all. My eyes wander to the large mural depicting Cupid and a happy couple in his presence. I don’t know why, but it strikes me that the cherub god looks lonely among all the pairs.

As I wait at the front entrance, I’m thinking about my precarious future when Eros pulls up in my car. The passenger door opens, apparently on its own. He grins when I raise my eyebrows.

“I found a great place for breakfast,” he says as I buckle myself in.

“How?” I ask.

“The magical spell called the internet.” Eros waves his phone around. “Sweetheart, I know how to use a search engine.”

I chuckle. I don’t know why I thought he would still be stuck in ancient times. “Then proceed forth in my chariot.”
