Carl had his woman over here!

“Motherfucker!” I scream. So the rule is only meant for me? Sure, he owns the place, but I pay my share. Why is he allowed to lay down the law and is the first one to break it?

“What the freaking hell?” I yell.

Eros pops in right next to me. His eyes are wide, and he spins to identify the threat. “What’s wrong?”

I point to the evidence.

“Uh… Hair has youthisupset?” he asks with complete bafflement.

“A woman cleaned out her hairbrush. Carl threw all evidence of me in my room and shut the door.”

The situation becomes clear to Eros, and he nods understandingly. “He broke his own rules.”

“Screw it!” I throw my hands in the air. “You’re staying.”

Eros grins wickedly. “You want me to make him jealous?”

“No.Angry,” I snap, “like I am right now.”

I was so worried about breaking Carl’s rules, but it seems he doesn’t give a crap how this will make me feel.

Eros tries to soothe me with a gentle stroke on my arm. “Why are you this angry?” Then, after a second, he hums. “Oh, your pure heart, it beats forhim.”

I open my mouth to argue, but I can’t lie to Eros, not about love, so I palm my face with both hands and feel tears well up.

Eros circles his arms around me and lets me grieve… or whatever I’m doing.

When I finally pull away, I say, “Thanks for the hug, but we should probably just go. I don’t want the drama. I already have enough of my recent career change as a matchmaker.”

He catches my chin with a firm but gentle hand. “You aren’t going to stay and see what this man has to say for himself?”

“Why?” I shake my head and dislodge my chin from Eros’s hold. “So I can hear how he fell in love with someone else?”

So I can crumble into a pile of broken rubble?

“Don’t you live here and pay your share?” he asks.

“Yeah, but?—”

“No buts,” Eros argues. “You have me with you now. Don’t you want to see if you can win his heart?”

“Why would you help me with this?” I ask, staring him in the eye and trying to figure out his game.

“There’s no rule that a matchmaker can’t have a relationship as well.” Eros smiles. “In fact, I encourage it.”

“Oh.” As I gaze up at Eros’s face, I catch an emotion flickering over it, but I can’t say what it is. Jealousy over his matchmakers’ love lives or sadness come to mind. Maybe both. He probably knows a little of how I feel about his heartbreak over Psyche.

“This is your home too,” Eros says with conviction, holding my upper arms to keep my attention. “You should stay, at least until you find out what’s happening, and then I can find a place if that suits your needs.”

As independent as I see myself, I hate to admit that it feels comforting to have someone attempting to take care of me when I feel like my world is imploding.

I duck under his arm and out of the tight quarters of Carl’s bathroom. This is all becoming too intense, and Carl hasn’t even come home yet.

I head to my room and collect all the framed photos of me that Carl stashed on my desk. Instead of putting them back out, I find a half empty box in my closet so I will already have them packed away. It’ll make things easier when I move out.

I think about what Eros said as I unpack my suitcase. Itismy home, and I don’t know what’s going on with Carl yet. Apparently, the rules changed this weekend. He has let someone inside our sanctuary.
