He appears confused by my disappointed expression. I’m sure he isn’t used to being reprimanded for his naughty behavior.

“I’ll have the usual,” I say with irritation in my voice.

“Whatever that is, I’ll have it too.”

Gina snaps out of her spell and runs off to put the order in.

“Don’t work your mojo on my friends,” I hiss.

“What?” he asks. “If you are talking about her reaction to me, then that was all her.” His answer rings true.

“I’ve never seen her act like that around a hot guy,” I argue.

“Well, then yes, I suppose she might be reacting to her feelings of desire or love. I’m like a mirror, reflecting and amplifying someone’s inner being.Usually.”

“But you don’t mess with me like that,” I say, my nose wrinkling in confusion.

“I know,” he says mysteriously and leans back in his seat, eyeing me like I’m a mystery to solve.

I fluster and bite my lip, thinking about how Ihavereacted to him—at least a bit. Sure, I’ve noticed his handsomeness, but I haven’t gone gaga like I have seen several people do at thispoint. I have desire in me too, so why wouldn’t that be reflected in my interactions with him? Maybe I’m not affected because I’m a matchmaker. It would probably make things awkward and nonproductive if I constantly drooled on him.

I glance around the restaurant before whispering, “Is it because of…whatI am?”

“Yes,” Eros answers but doesn’t expound.

Gina drops off our iced teas with a nervous smile focused on me. I can tell she’s embarrassed at her behavior around my date, then her eyes bug out when she sees the enormous ruby ring on my ring finger. She mouths, “Call me soon.” Then she hurries off with several glances back our way.

I relax back in my seat and sip my drink. When I do, I realize how much I need a moment alone. I’m getting used to Eros’s presence, but I’m usually alone all day while Carl is at work. Even before living with Carl, I was mostly alone when I lived with my mother.

I need a moment so I can decompress. If Eros refuses to let me take a walk alone or something, maybe I can take another long bath by myself.

Magically, my chili burger with a pile of fries appears before me. Well, not really. I must have zoned out longer than I realized. Thankfully, Eros hasn’t interrupted my need for a quiet moment.

He barks out a laugh at our dishes since he has the same as mine. “For the love ofme, what is this monster?”

I grin at his surprise. “A mega-love chili burger.” To Gina, I say, “Thanks, we’re good.”

She walks off, and I turn back to Eros. “You have to at least try a bite.”

“This is the kind of substance that gives what you mortals callheartburn. When I first heard of that illness, I thought it had something to do with me.”

I laugh, and he chuckles in return.

Hesitantly, he picks up the huge burger and looks at me, as if hoping I won’t make him eat it.

“One bite.” I wave him on with a French fry, and then I shove it in my mouth.

He takes a moment to study the quirk of my lips, probably to see if this is a joke.

I pick up my burger to encourage him, and we both bite down at the same time.

He moans as he chews. The sound is a bit indecent in the small restaurant, and I glance over to see Gina blushing.

I shake my head and laugh so hard that I’m worried my food will eject from my mouth. I cover my face with a napkin and wait for Eros to recover from his encounter.

“That was pure ambrosia,” he says before he takes another bite.

“I’m glad you like it. Sounds like you might’ve fallen in love,” I say with amusement.
