Well, I guess I’m going to hell with Dante himself.Great.

A gorgeous specimen of a man appears next to the woman. Oddly enough, he’s wearing a tight black tee with fashionably torn jeans. His hair is dark with lighter tips, kissed by the sun. His striking ice-blue eyes flash brightly as he takes in the scene—another supermodel worthy specimen.

Dante nods his head in greeting to all of us. He glances at my predicament and then back at the woman. “What’s up, baby death?” he asks casually.

Why is everyone acting like a mortal hanging in some winged man’s arms over a cliff is an everyday occurrence?Crap, what if it is?

“He’s trying to claim rights to this woman,” the death agent says to Dante. “See what the book says.”

Dante pulls out an old, leather-bound book from the ethers, opens it, and skims the pages.

“Who the hell is he?” I whisper.

“Karma agent,” the death agent answers. “He’s checking what your potential life paths inherbook are.”

“Cupid’s right.” Dante nods thoughtfully. “This event was one possible outcome. She has three outcomes here and now. One, she dies. Two, she’s crippled after she crashes onto the rocks. Three, she is claimed by a supernatural?—”

“Yes, the third is that she works for me,” Cupid interrupts.

“My only options?” When Dante nods, I ask Cupid, “What does that mean… work for you? Like get you coffee and handle your dry cleaning?”

“Be a matchmaker,” Cupid says.

“I don’t think I would be very good at that job.”

He tilts his head, gesturing to the rocky terrain below. “You’d rather be dead or crippled than attempt to work for me?”

“You would just toss me if I said no?” I grip his arms so he can’t do it.

“I’m sorry, beautiful.”

“Unfortunately, he has to let you drop if you say no,” the angel of death answers for him. “He can’t interfere with your scheduled death unless he takes responsibility for you.”

I stare into his mesmerizing amber eyes. “What if I can’t do what you ask of me? Will I be punished or killed in a more horrible way?”

“I’m not worried, since I’ll train you myself.” Cupid grins. “If you don’t work out as a matchmaker, you’ll have other opportunities.”

As ridiculously handsome as he is, the idea of following around another man I can’t have doesn’t sound appealing, and this one is the god of desire, no less. Am I ever going to get my happily ever after?

“Will I get any kind of life of my own?” I ask.

Cupid stares into my eyes, and I feel a tug on my heart. “I will help you with your situation as training.”

“My situation?” I ask.

“Your… untapped love.”

I blanch. He must know about Carl, or at least my feelings about him.

“That’s a lost cause, but I suppose I should take you up on your offer.” I try to shrug, but it’s hard when his arms are under mine, holding me afloat.

“Don’t sound so enthused,” Cupid grumbles, as if he’s offended.

“Sorry.” I frown. “I just haven’t been lucky in love, so I don’t see how I will be very good at this.”

Cupid glares at the death agent and Dante. “She has accepted my offer. Now leave us.”

Death Barbie huffs, then she glances out at the stunning sunset and smiles.
