But as Avraam continues to grin at me like some kind of psycho, everyone looks back down at their computers and goes back to work.

Seriously? Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?

“Avraam,” I hiss through gritted teeth, crossing my arms.

“We can talk about this in my office,” he says, motioning toward a door at the far end of the room. It has Robert’s name on it.

I want to scream, but I contain my fury so that I don’t embarrass myself in front of my new coworkers. With my fists balled and my heart pounding in my chest, I reluctantly follow Avraam to Robert’s office.

“Explain yourself,” I demand as the door closes behind us.

Avraam takes his time walking around the desk, sliding into the big leather seat like he’s worked here his entire life. It’d be comical if I weren’t so angry.

He pulls a cigar from his jacket pocket, running it under his nose as he leans back. There’s a thin smile on his lips, obnoxious and self-serving.

“You can’t smoke in here,” I say as he pulls out a lighter.

“I’m the boss, darling. I can do anything I want.” He lowers his gaze to me, his eyes glowing with mischief. “That’s a nice blouse you have on. Appears to be silk. Is someone trying to look sexy on her first day of work? You’ll have to try a little harder to get a raise out of me on your first day.”

I glare at him with such contempt that I’m a little bit surprised he doesn’t explode into flames.

Disappointing.

“I have a million questions about what you’re doing and why, but I’m a bit afraid to hear your answers,” I say, placing my fingertips on the edge of the desk and leaning in.

He lights up his cigar, puffing blue smoke into the already stuffy room. “Then don’t ask them, darling.”

“Would you stop calling me that? I’m not your darling,” I snap.

“What would you prefer to be called?” he asks calmly. “Baby? Sweetheart? Perhaps my little whore?”

The last thing on earth I want to feel right now is arousal, but that’s where I am right now. My legs tremble slightly as I clamp them together, trying to encourage the warmth in my panties to go away.

Not here. Not now. Please, I can’t let him know he does this to me.

“You can’t talk to me like that at work,” I say, finally mustering up the courage to talk back to him. “I will go to HR.”

He holds his hands out with that silly cigar tucked between his teeth, looking around in a mock show of confusion. “Where are they?”

“I’m sure they’re in this building somewhere.”

“Nope. Already fired,” he replies, pulling the cigar out of his mouth and ashing it straight onto the desk. “And unless you want to meet the same fate, I suggest you sit down and start listening.” He points to the chair beside me. “Go on, sit.”

I obey him only because of the house. If that down payment hadn’t cleaned out my savings entirely, I would already be out the door. However, I need this job to pay my mortgage.

“Good girl,” Avraam murmurs once I’m seated.

I remain silent, unwilling to give him any more opportunities to tease me. I hate his guts and I’m going to get him back for this. One way or another, he’s going to pay.

He blows a smoke ring toward me, and I wave it away. “Stop it. Just stop, Avraam. This isn’t funny.”

“No, you’re right. This is very serious,” he replies, lacing his fingers together. “I brought you into my office for a reason.”

“Robert’s office.”
