Okay, now I’m truly battling back a smile. But I remind myself of what he did to me, how the three of them stabbed me in the back with an invisible knife.

An invisible butter knife.

Trystan summons a breath before addressing me. “Allura, can I go?”

I tap my finger against my bottom lip. “Maybe if you get down on your knees and ask nicely.”

“Seriously?” Trystan whispers.

“Yeah,” I reply with a shrug.

Reece is watching me in delight while Jessa looks horror-stricken.

“Al,” she hisses. “What are you doing?”

I shrug. “I’m not sure yet.”

Perhaps this is occurring because I’m high. At least, that’s the excuse I tell myself. I’m really not so stoned that I can’t see past the fog.

Trystan waits for a beat before sinking onto his knees.

“Allura, can I please leave?” he begs.

I pause for longer than I should before saying, “Fine. As long as you don’t tell anyone about me being here.”

“He won’t,” Reece assures me then steps up beside Trystan. “Isn’t that right?”

I’m surprised he’s going to let Trystan go so easily. Still, I don’t get too relaxed yet. This is Reece. He’s flaky and changes gears faster than a race car.

Trystan nods. “Yes, sir.”

“Good.” Reece motions for him to go. “You can leave now.”

Trystan leaps to his feet and runs out of the room, stumbling on his way out.

Jessa jumps to her feet. “What in the hell was that about?”

“I seriously have no idea what’s going on?” Jay mumbles. “I mean, Jessa said some stuff, but”—he looks between Reece and me—“it can’t be true.”

“Shh …” Jessa shushes him then blasts me with a dirty look. “Why the hell did you do that? That’s not like you.”

“I’m sorry,” I say. “I just …” I waver. “I honestly think I’m more stoned than I thought.”

I don’t want to tell her the truth. Jessa didn’t know me very well when I hung out with Reece, Ryder, and Blaise. She has never witnessed that wild side of me, the troublemaking one, the girl who got into fights and totally got off on it because I don’t want to be that girl anymore. Can’t be.

And here I am, reverting to my old habits after spending only a few minutes around Reece. Unfortunately, I also eliminated my chance of doing what I set out to do tonight. Not that Trystan would fuck me after he discovered my identity.

“How did Trystan even know who you are?” Jessa asks as she combs her fingers through her hair.

I frown. “I have no idea.”

“Because his father works for yours,” Reece interrupts, retrieving his phone from his pocket. He checks the screen, frowns, and then pockets it again. “He’s just a lackey, so I don’t think we’ll have to worry about him.” A half-smile touches his lips. “Although, you still have to worry about me.”

“Fuck you.” I move to stride past him, but his fingers wrap around my arm. “Let me go,” I warn.

He ignores me. “Jessa, can you give Al and me a moment?”

Jessa shakes her head. “I’m not leaving her alone with you.”
