I eyed him over, wondering if I should let him. Reece was one of my best friends, and while kissing could complicate things, I doubted it would with him. Maybe if it was Ryder or Blaise, but Reece was the sort of guy who could kiss one of his friends just for fun.

“All right.”

“Yeah?” He seemed a bit surprised.

I nodded. “Yeah, let’s do it.”

He wasted no time, leaning over and licking his lips. Then his lips brushed mine. And it was perfect—a perfect kiss.

But just because that kiss all those years ago was perfect doesn’t mean I’m eager to kiss him right now.

“I’ve kissed a handful,” I reply vaguely. “Not that it’s any of your fucking business.”

“Isn’t it?” he mumbles but shakes his head. Then he slips his arm around my waist and presses his palm to the small of my back. I start to lean in, but he stops me, reaching up and brushing the pad of his thumb along my bottom lip. “I still think you have the most gorgeous lips ever.” He gives me no chance to respond, dipping his head and kissing me.

The moment our mouths come into contact, I become painfully aware that I should’ve set some terms for this kiss, specifically no tongue. But before I can pull back, he’s parting my lips and slipping his tongue into my mouth. I grip his shirt, briefly losing my mind and pulling him closer as he devours me, his fingers traveling up my back then softly tugging at my hair.

I fucking groan, like a full-on desperate, pathetic groan.

I jerk away and trip back, barely able to get oxygen into my lungs. His eyelids flutter open, and when his gaze sweeps across me, he smashes his lips together so forcefully the skin around his lips turns white.

“We’re done here,” I snap, loathing the unevenness in my tone.

I veer around him, half-expecting him to block my path, but he allows me to pass, and then annoyingly tags along after me.

I spin around right before we reach the living room. “What are you doing?”

“Walking you to your car,” he clarifies, rippling with tension as he peers around the crowded room.

“I can get there myself,” I tell him, crossing my arms. “I don’t need an escort.”

He shakes his head. “Sorry, but I can’t let you do that. You never should’ve been walking around this area alone.”

I breathe in and out of my nose to stop myself from exploding. Then I march through the crowd in search for Jessa. She’s in the kitchen, taking a shot with Jay. When she spots me, her eyes light up, but then her expression bunches into a scowl.

“What’s wrong?” she asks as I reach her. “Why is he following you?”

“I have to leave!” I shout over the music. “You can totally stay if you want to, though.”

She shakes her head then hands her empty shot glass to Jay. “I’m not letting you go anywhere alone with him.” She glares at Reece.

“She’s not leaving with me.” Reece moves up beside me. “I’m just walking her to her car.”

Her frown deepens. “Why do we have to leave?” she asks me. “Can’t he just keep his mouth shut? I mean, he owes you that much.”

She’s right, but that doesn’t mean things work that way. Right and wrong is nonexistent in this world.

“It’s not safe here,” Reece says, tensely peering around again. “And while I can’t tell you to leave”—his gaze lands on Jessa—“I’d recommend it.”

“Well, I was planning on it, but I’m only doing it so I can go with my bestie.” She flips her hair off her shoulder. “Not because you’re telling me I should.”

“Whatever.” Tension is rolling off Reece in a way I’ve never seen before. Maybe that’s just how he is now, but for some reason, I get the feeling something terrible may be going down here. Perhaps I’m being paranoid. I don’t know.

“Wait—you’re leaving?” Jay asks with a pouty frown.

Jessa leans forward and whispers something in his ear that makes him bite his lip. They start kissing, and I look at Reece. Weirdly, he’s staring out into the crowd with a biting edge in his posture.

Something is definitely wrong with him tonight. But I don’t care. I don’t.
