I lift a shoulder, but holy hell, was I just gawking at Porter? If so, did anyone else, besides Reece, notice?

Reece assesses me closely. “You look like you’re blushing.”

“No.” That might be a lie.

“Yes, you are,” he says with more confidence as he leans back. “Do you have a thing for him or something?”

“N-no.” Another lie. And a bad one, too, since I stutter it.

Dammit, Al, get it together. This is your best friend you’re talking to, even if he is a hot guy.

“You know, if you told me the truth, I could help you get a date with him,” Reece tells me enticingly.

“How?” I question. “You’re not even friends with him.”

He bumps his locker shut then drapes his arm around my shoulders, turning me in the direction of Porter, who has started walking down the hallway, away from us.

“So? Everyone wants to be friends with me,” he points out as we meander in the same direction as Porter.

“Cocky much?” I mumble, inching to the side as a group of football players pass us.

“Yeah, but you’ve known that about me forever,” he says, pulling me closer as we near a more crowded part of the hallway.

“And speaking of cocky …” he suddenly states as his gaze flicks behind us.

I’m about to turn around when someone steps up beside me.

My other best friend, Ryder.

Where Reece is all blond hair, blue eyes, and glittering smiles, Ryder is the polar opposite with short dark hair, gray eyes, and he has what many girls refer to as a smoldering intensity. But if you ask me, it’s just plain assholery. Ryder isn’t a douchebag to me, and though I sometimes get bothered by his douchebaggery, and even call him out on it, he doesn’t mistreat me. In fact, he’s always acted the opposite toward me as he does with almost everyone else. That might be because we’ve been best friends forever, and he looks at me like his younger sister, who he has to protect, even though we’re the same age.

I also know him well enough that I can read him with just one look.

“You were hooking up with someone,” I remark as Ryder rakes his fingers through his hair.

His gaze flicks to me. “Why do you say that?”

“Because your button’s undone.” I point to the button on his pants.

He glances down then mutters, “Shit,” before buttoning it.

“Which means Al was secretly looking at your dick, man,” Reece jokes with a smirk.

I blast him with a dirty look. “No, I wasn’t.” When Reece cocks his brow at me, I decide to play his smart-mouth game because, with Reece, it’s really the only thing you can do. “I obviously wasn’t doing it secretly since I told him.”

He stares at me for a beat before he busts up laughing. Even Ryder cracks a smile, and he’s not much of a smiler.

“And that’s why I love you, baby,” Reece says, pulling me closer to kiss me on the forehead.

The guys are always doing that sort of stuff with me, but it’s merely a friendly thing. Still, girls get jealous of their affection toward me to the point where it’s caused me to get into a couple of fights. It also has me worried that …

“Dude, don’t do that when we’re in Porter’s vicinity,” I hiss. “He might think we’re dating or something.”

Reece cocks a brow. “Or something? What’s the something?”

“That’s what I was wondering, too,” Ryder chimes in as he stuffs his phone into the back pocket of his jeans.

“I don’t know.” I shrug. “Like we’re hooking up or something.”
