‘Incredible,’ said Ronan brightly.

‘Unbelievable,’ said Claire, at the exact same moment.

They laughed.

Imelda smiled as she passed them their drinks.

‘Paris will do that,’ she said, reversing farther down the aisle.

Looking out the window, Claire could see, six miles below: a long, white strip of cliff where land met water. Shadows of clouds appeared to float on the surface of the sea, riding the combined forces of wind and tide. The plane adjusted its course, veering left into a light mist. In the space between sky and sea, a ring of refracted light formed and hovered.

‘Hey,’ she said, grabbing Ronan’s arm. ‘Look!’

But by the time he craned his head to the window, the plane had angled away.

‘What am I supposed to be looking at?’

‘It was a perfect full circle – a complete rainbow.’ She wondered if she could have imagined it.

‘I believe you,’ he said, kissing her cheek. ‘Thousands wouldn’t, but I believe you.’

She looked out the window again. They were well out over the channel now. They had risen above the mist into a bright blue sky. She couldn’t see France anymore. She couldn’t see the perfect rainbow, but it was there all the same, like a promise.
