“She left town the day after the gala and returned the ring I had given her.”

“I’m sorry. I had no idea.”

“How would you?” He gave a small smile.

“Did she give you a reason as to why she left?”

“She said she needed to go away to work on some issues she had with herself and she needed to be alone. If only she would have talked to me, I could have helped. I was in love with her,” he spoke with a sadness in his voice.

I felt bad for the man.

“And you have no clue as to where she went?”

“No. I had a private investigator try to track her down after I kept calling her cellphone and it went straight to voicemail, but no luck. He’s convinced she wasn’t who she said she was.”

“Do you believe that?” I asked.

“I do. The more I thought about it, the more things didn’t add up. I believe this woman was out to con me somehow.”

“If she was, she wouldn’t have given you back the ring,” I spoke.

“I suppose that’s true.”

“Unfortunately, she was just a messed-up woman with a lot of issues. She did you a favor by leaving.”

“Maybe you’re right, Gabriel. Thank you, my friend. And you’re right, she wouldn’t have returned the ring.”

“You’re welcome.” I smiled. “I need to get back to the office. It was good seeing you.”

Chapter 21

Kate

Ispent half the day in Central Park, walking around and taking in the beauty of the spring scenery. It felt good to get out of that house and it gave me time to think about what I was going to do once my thirty days were up. My lease for the entire year was already paid for and my dad was here, so moving wasn’t an option just yet. Plus, I needed a place for him to come to when I got him out of prison. Samuel Coldwater was going to help with that until Gabriel stepped in and ruined it for me. He was going to be my last con. The con that would help get my father out of prison and home with me where he belonged.

“Is there anywhere else you want to go before I take you home?” Edmond asked in a serious and monotone voice.

“Starbucks would be nice.”

“Fine.”

Rolling my eyes, I laid my head back against the seat and took in a deep breath. The thought of going to see Caleb and his band play tonight thrilled me. The less time I spent cooped up in that house, the better. Edmond parked around the corner from Starbucks and we both climbed out and headed down the street, him walking behind me. Something he’d done all day.

“You can walk next to me. I promise I won’t bite,” I spoke as I turned my head and looked at him.

His eye narrowed as he stared straight ahead. We stepped into Starbucks and waited in line.

“Coffee’s on me today.” I smiled at him. “What would you like?”

“Nothing.” He stood tall with his hands folded in front of him.

“Oh come on, Ed. Lighten up and have a coffee with me.” I shoulder bumped him.

“I’m fine, Miss Harper.” He shot me a dirty look.

It was my turn to order and the barista gave me a cheerful greeting.

“Two Grande caramel macchiatos with non-fat milk, please.”
