“If you ever change your mind”—she raised her wispy white brows at me—“you know where to find me.”

I gulped, grabbing the bag from the counter and shuffling back, directly into Holt. His fingers curled around my hips and gave them a squeeze, but when I turned my wide-eyed stare on him, he just smiled at me cheerfully.

“I’m—I—Thank you.” I resisted the urge to dip into a bow. Why did I want to bow? Did the Mafia even do that? “Th-thanks. But really, he’s—It’s nothing. He’s nothing.”

I heard Holt let out a little purr as he dipped his head to kiss the bend of my neck. “Damn right,” he murmured, then said, “See you at the club, Ethel.”

“That you will, my dear.” She gave him a sweet smile. “And do try to convince that lovely boy to give my granddaughter a chance, would you?”

“Mm,” Holt said noncommittally, lacing his fingers through mine and tugging me away. He gave my hand a meaningful squeeze. “Time to hit up the grocery store, babe.”

I stumbled a little, still staring at Ethel. Just before I tore my wild-eyed gaze from her, she gave me a wink.

Oh fuck. I definitely need to ask Holt about paying some kind of protection fee so I didn’t wake up with a werewolf head in my bed.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Holt’s Interesting Taste in Foreplay

When I asked Holt, once we were far enough away from the thrift store, if Ethel was the boss of a lizard granny crime syndicate, he just laughed.

Which wasn’t an answer.

“No, seriously,” I said as we made our way down the street, heading for the nearest grocery store before going back to mine. “I can’t even remember why the thought popped into my head, but I am convinced it is a thing.”

Holt pffed and waved a hand carelessly. “I mean, Ethel does have a big group of similar friends. But I’m pretty sure they just… knit or whatever. Talk about the old days. I dunno.”

What were “the old days” for a bunch of giant lizards? Prehistoric times? Spending their youths sunning themselves on rocks and… I didn’t actually know what else lizards did. Eat bugs?

“So you don’t have to pay her, like, protection money?” I asked nervously, glancing around and keeping my voice hushed. “Is the club on her… turf?”

He chuckled. “The club’s on my turf. I own the building, remember?”

“I feel like you’re answering all my questions in a roundabout way to hide the truth,” I grumbled. “I can handle it, Holt. Tell me. The Lizard Granny Mafia is a thing, isn’t it?”

Laughing, Holt stopped and turned to face me. “If it is a thing, I’m not in the know about it. All I know is that Ethel is a total party animal, and when she comes to watch the wrestling with some of her friends, they are wild.”

“Her friends… are they all little old ladies?” I asked, staring at him wide-eyed.

“Yeah.”

“So they could be Mafia.”

“If they are, I’ve never gotten mixed up in any of their business.” He shrugged, then shot me a smile that was probably supposed to be innocent, but just looked filthy. “I’m a good boy, Taylor.”

Well, that succeeded in making me forget all about Big E and her mob of lizard grannies. At least for the time being. Swallowing, I wet my lips and inched closer to him. “Are you?”

“Yes.” He walked his fingers up my stomach with a sly smile. “And good boys get rewarded. So I think you should take me back to your place and let me lick ice cream off your dick.”

My mouth went dry. I croaked, “That… that sounds more like a reward for me.”

“I have an idea about what you can do for me before we get to that part,” he rasped, trailing his fingers back down my front to curl the tips around the waistband of my jeans.

“What is it?” I asked hoarsely, shifting from foot to foot when my cock twitched.

He smirked and grabbed my hand to lead me down the street. “You’ll find out when we get there.”

When we got to my apartment after stopping by the grocery store to grab our supplies, Holt finally told me what he wanted. And it was literally the last thing I expected.
