Just a giant fucking lizard. In a pink floral dress. In an instant, she towered over the bald guy, almost twice his size. She looked like a crocodile standing on two legs, except she was a deep purple colour and there were wicked spikes trailing down her spine, poking through her dress.

Without missing a beat, she linked her arm back through her companion’s, and they cheerfully made their way to the bar.

Cackling Granny had just turned into a lizard.

Blood Suckapunch had turned into a bat.

High Lord Crossbody could fly.

Those two cops were demons.

All the blood drained from my face as I slowly turned to look at Holt. Holt with his grey skin and pink irises and wobbly pupils that somehow expanded even though they should’ve been hidden by contacts.

“Taylor looks like he’s gonna barf.” Larkin snickered from the back of the room. My wide-eyed gaze slowly swivelled toward him.

He was sprawled on his belly across the couch, playing on his phone. His insectoid wings were opening and closing gently, and I realised I could actually see where they joined effortlessly to his back through the slits in his shirt. No glue or seam or edge. Just a cobalt root that blended into the pale blue of his skin.

He blinked at me with his unnaturally big and bright blue eyes and shot me an odd look. “What, dude?”

“You’re…” My voice was faint. “You…”

Holt audibly swallowed. “Taylor…”

My gaze shot back to him, still wide and dazed. “You’re…”

“I can explain,” Holt rasped, his voice throaty with nerves. “Just don’t—”

My eyes rolled back in my head. Oh no. It was happening. I was getting the vapours.

Chapter Thirteen

What Happens after You See a Little Old Lady Turn into a Lizard

Something cold and wet was snuffling at my ear. A warm hand was on the centre of my chest, another cradling the back of my head.

Just as my eyelids started fluttering open, cold water was squirted onto my face. Some of it went directly into my mouth, making me choke and splutter.

“Larkin,” Holt snapped. “Why the fuck did you do that?”

“I thought that was how you woke people up when they passed out!”

“Do you know how close I am to firing you after this entire shitshow?”

“Sorry,” Larkin mumbled, sounding like a scolded puppy. “I was just trying to help.”

There was an exasperated huff from Holt. The hand on my chest vanished, and the loud sniffing sound at my ear was replaced by an excited little yip. “Make yourself actually useful and take Cora.”

My eyes opened in time to see Larkin’s beautiful insectoid wings as he walked to the back couch with Cora tucked under his arm.

The wings.

The demons.

Lizard Granny. Lizard Granny.

“Hey, don’t get up yet,” Holt said quickly as I tried to struggle upright. “It’s okay. Fuck, I’m sorry, Taylor. I’ll get Seb to drive you home.”

Wait, what? I may have been freaking out about the existence of monsters—flamboyant, wrestling monsters and old lady lizard monsters—but I still wanted to see the show. I wanted to see the Tasselled Tussler spinning his nipple tassels, damn it!
