I lay there and take it all in silence. Yelling is for children, and screaming is only effective if there’s help nearby. There’s no help for me here, and I am not a child. So, I remain still and silent for him to use in hopes that it will all come to an end soon.

Chapter 13

A figure blurs in front of me, and it takes me a second too long to realize someone is taking Laney. I’m already in my wheelchair about to head down for a midnight snack, so when I see Laney being dragged away unconscious, I roll into the hallway and yell.

“Havoc!”

The panic in my voice scares me and he comes running in, wearing nothing but his boxers. I power wheel myself to the garage as fast as my arms will let me, knowing that’s where they must be headed to get out of here.

“Someone took Laney!” I yell as he jogs to my side. “GO! I’m right behind you!”

He doesn’t waste time with useless questions, knowing how vital every second is.We can’t lose her. What was the point of me living if we lose her?

I abandon the wheelchair at the top of the stairs. It takes me a second to get down them and into the garage, but with the adrenaline I’m able to quickly jump into the closest car. The loud rumble of Havoc’s bike echoes through the space, and I see the weapons safe by the door is open. I pull the car up to it and roll down my window to grab a handgun and an extra fully loaded clip.

My tires squeal as I pull out of the garage and my heart nearly pounds out of my chest. Havoc told me his idea of how we were going to make things up to her, but she has to survive this so that we can follow through. We didn’t do all of this planning to lose her. We swore we would fight, and we are going to do just that.

Gun shots ring out in the distance and I round the corner to see Havoc shooting at the tires, which sends the car rolling down the hillside.

I clench the steering wheel. If he just accidentally hurt Laney, I’m going to punch him in his perfect fucking face. What the hell was he thinking?

He takes his bike down the hill as I pull the car over. I can walk, just not for long distances, but I push that thought aside as I stumble down the hill with every ounce of strength my legs can manage.

Sweat beads on my brow from the mixture of anxiety, fear, and exertion. But I force myself to keep going until I see Havoc take a crowbar out of his saddlebag to pop open the trunk.

Havoc lifts Laney out just as the driver's door opens and a woman attempts to sprint away. I haven’t shot a gun in a few months now, but something is better than nothing.

I fire four shots rapidly at her feet, knowing one of them hits when she stumbles and falls into the dirt.

“Havoc, get the woman. Give me Laney.”

The man nearly throws her into my arms, but I catch her and immediately fall to the ground, giving in to the exhaustion my legs are feeling. It’s damp from the morning dew already, but I don’t care.

Laney grabs onto my robe I had thrown on just before I saw her being taken. Her body shakes as she cries into my chest. Instinctively, I envelop her in my arms while watching Havoc wrestle the woman who tried to take her from us.

Eventually, he gets on top of her while pointing a gun at her forehead. “Give me a fucking reason!” he yells and her body instantly goes still. We all do.

“You tried to take one of the only people in this world that I care about. So give me a reason, right the fuck now, why I shouldn’t shoot you.”

She lifts her hands in surrender.

“Fine, gosh you don’t have to yell about it. I’ll stop, you got me. Just don’t shoot me, this face is too pretty to be ruined by a bullet.”

Havoc’s brows pinch as he looks back at me but I just shrug in confusion. It’s then that I hear what Laney is mumbling.

“Let me go. Please let me go. I’ll do what you want, just let me go.” It’s just a faint whisper. Her lips tremble as she seems lost in a nightmare. I rock her gently and thread my fingers in her hair.

“We’ve got you, Kitten. Open your eyes, baby girl. We’ve got you.”

It takes her a second for her breathing to calm, but her glassy eyes finally break open only for a heart wrenching sob to escape her, one I can feel in the depths of my soul.

“Havoc, get that woman to the basement then come back here for us.”

“I can’t just leave you out here.”

I look around me before realizing I put my phone in my pocket. Carefully, I pull it out while Laney clings to me and toss it over to him.

“Call whoever you need to. I’m not leaving her like this.”
