Page 69 of Arrow to my Heart

Number one rule in the life of a mafia princess, if the phone is ringing, it’s never good. My heart sinks even more when I see it’s Akio.

“Hello,” I say, my voice wary.

“I need your help,Ai.” Akio’s voice is broken, as if he has been crying for hours.

“Whatever you need,” I say without hesitation.

Akio was introducing his boyfriend to his family this week. If he’s this upset, I’m scared to hear what happened.

Scratch that, I’m terrified. I can fight people coming at us all day long, but I can’t fight heartbreak.

“Can…” his voice cuts off on a cry. I wait patiently as Havoc and Arrow watch me.

My heart is breaking for my friend right now, and they can see it. Another male voice comes over the phone. I recognize it as Adrian in a heartbeat.

“Hey girl, can we come and stay with you for a bit? Our families have decided they no longer want to deal with ourconfusion.”

I want to throttle someone. I actually don’t think the sight of blood would make me squeamish right now if it means I get to hurt whoever would do this to my boys.

Yes, they’re mine, even if we aren’t together in that sense. Akio and Adrian are mine to protect. Just like I would protect Evie or Nessa and their men.

“I’ll have a room ready for you. Whatever you need, I’m here.”

“Thanks,” Adrian says, sadness lacing his tone.

“Does Akio need chocolate strawberries?”

A sad chuckle rather than nothing makes me feel a little better.

“He’s going to need all of the chocolate you can provide.”

“Careful what you ask for, Adrian, I will turn your room into a scene straight from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory if it means that man never cries like that again.”

Arrow’s eyes never leave me as I stand and head to the kitchen, sifting through the pantry for what we will need.

“He’s lucky to have you. We will be there soon.”

“Be safe.”

We end the call, and Havoc comes into the pantry with me while I get out every piece of chocolate I can find. It will takethem a few hours to get here, so I have time to whip up some special strawberries and brownies. The good kind of brownies.

“What’s going on?” Havoc folds his arms while using his mammoth of a body to block the doorway.

I take a deep breath because this is about to be a rant like I’ve never had before. I hope he’s prepared.

???

Spoiler alert, he was not prepared.I yelled, threw things around the kitchen, and even let a few tears fall. I couldn’t believe the injustice of being treated so dismally by the people who are supposed to love him most. Even when I made questionable decisions, my family had my back, and being who you are is never a poor choice.

How dare they.

“Laney,” Havoc says, seeing my spiral about to start again.

“What?” It’s a bit harsh, causing him to raise an eyebrow. “I’m sorry. I just feel things so deeply, and this hurts me because he’s hurting.”

It took a lot of convincing to let two other men stay in our home, but let’s be real, this house is huge. We have an entire wing we don’t even use.

I had to remember to turn on the air over there because it normally stays off. That’s how much we don’t use it. Arrow approaches me while I furiously take the brownies out of the oven. Once I’ve set them down, he rubs my back in soothing circles.
