I needed to make a decision yesterday, but that was beside the fact.

Dr. Myers glanced around, watching as the final few students made their way out the door. She gave them a soft wave off. “What course of study are you debating between?”

“Oh, well.” I struggled to come up with a suitable lie. “I was figuring out between business maybe or…”

My professor cocked her head at me. “I see.”

“I’m deciding. I know I’ll choose soon.”

“This is actually why I wanted to have a quick chat with you,” Dr. Myers shouldered her smooth leather tote bag. “I was curious if you had any interest in pursuing something in the biology field.”

“Biology?”

“Or even medical,” she said. “I’ve seen nursing and even pre-med students with worse grades than you have been pulling in your recent courses.”

“Medical.” I could hear my mother preening in my head. Her daughter is becoming a doctor.“I don’t know.”

“It’s alright if you don’t. I just thought I would try to convince you after seeing you in a few of my classes now over the past two years. It’s rather impressive you’ve continued to be able to keep up even with…” she drifted off but with a smile.

She didn’t need to say what was very clear she wanted to after all. Even with my omega-ness.

I swallowed. “I enjoy the classes.”

“You have so much potential so long as you keep applying yourself and following your path as it is clear you have been,” said Dr. Myers. “Please, let me know if I can help you with anything or deciding or debating as you say, coming up when you do make your decision about your major or upcoming career plans even if they are not as traditional for what many may expect from you. I would love to help.”

A sort of warmth bloomed in my chest at her words. They were kind and understanding. “Okay. Thank you.”

“And I did receive a discreet alert from the health center,” Dr. Myers added after another moment when we were halfway out the door.

I froze in my tracks. “Excuse me?”

“It was very discreet and didn’t quite allude to what I imagine it is. I understand your biology as well, of course, but I know that the midterm will be due around the time the alert indicates you may not be able to make it to class coming up.” She danced around the words. She knew that my heat was coming up.

The health center told all my professors my heat was coming up?

Discreetly, apparently.

My cheeks burned, though oddly enough, more from anger than embarrassment. “I see.”

“Please feel free to turn in any midterm assignments before those dates so that you can stay on track. I highly suggest it,” Dr. Myers intoned.

“I see,” I said, clipped as we went down the end of the hallway towards the stairs. I quickly took a few at a time, leaving her a bit behind me. “Thank you for your advice.”

“Please reach out any time if I can help you with anything.”

Except apparently extended time on an assignment for a heat that would leave me in a health crisis inopportunely. Not that it mattered. I was planning on working ahead on my assignments like I always did anyway.

But still.

“Ugh,” I muttered down to myself. I pushed open the heavy metal doors outside. I passed the library, quickly stepping between trees so I didn’t get wet from the constant sprinkle of rain starting back up again, cold against my cheeks.

“Vera!” I stuttered in my step before I could stop myself as I was called out.

Again.

Only this time it wasn’t a slightly concerned professor.

My pause was all the time that Jacob needed to catch up with me as he sprinted out of the library wearing a deep purple Velnova sweatshirt. It complimented the color of his eyes. “Vera, wait up!”
