My mother flashed in my mind, speaking at me harshly so I’d understand.

You just don’t understand what they are like; she’d insist. They demean you, Vera.

Swallowing, I tried to stay strong and hold my ground.

“Go!” He barked.

My eyes widened, unable to stop myself from taking a few steps back from him. It felt like something in my chest was going to fight back and couldn’t. Tears flooded my eyes, but I wouldn’t let them fall.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked before correcting myself. It didn’t matter. “I’m not here for you.”

“I know what you are here for.”

“It doesn’t matter what you think, you know.” Right when I was getting used to the idea of maybe giving this all a chance, it felt like it was being yanked away from me.

“I am the head alpha of this pack,” Silas said. “It’s my responsibility and my decision. And they don’t need a stupid omega who is getting attached far too quickly.”

I felt like he punched me in the chest. Because that was exactly what I was.

I am.

“Anyway, they won’t want you soon once they find out exactly how much you care about them more than what they can be to you.”

“What?”

“Oh yeah, and what will they probably think of you when they find out that you have a secret heat coming up you failed to tell them about.”

I wanted to spout back that it was none of his or anyone’s business about my heat, but… It was. Wasn’t it? They were alphas and I was an omega and if it did get closer something happened.

“I bet they’ll feel so great when I tell them you have been keeping it under wraps to lure them to be near you and like you like some kind of needy omega brat.”

I narrowed my eyes, lip curling. “That’s not how a heat works.”

“No?” asked Silas. Though it was clear. He didn’t care. “So you don’t think they might think that you’ve been using them this entire time? Trying to get close enough to the one well-off pack on campus just as you are coming up on your heat you found out about oh, the day before you met Leeson. Or was it the day of? Now I must check my dates.”

I blinked a few times.

Is that what they’d think? That I was using them? I hadn’t even known anything about them until both Leeson and Jacob started to get closer to me. They even knew right off the bat that I tried to stay away. That I couldn’t have a fated mate let alone three and yet…

What if that was exactly what they believed if their pack leader told them so?

“Is that what you want them to know?” asked Silas again.

“No.”

“So, if you want it to stay that way, stay away from my pack mates.”

“Fine.”

“Fine?”

“Yes. Fine,” I repeated. “I’ll stay away from them so long as they stay away from me.”
