Maybe he’d want to.

“It’s my heat,” I finally admitted.

Both paused and turned towards me.

“Your heat,” repeated Jacob.

I nodded.

“Right now?” Jacob looked around and back at me, eyes flickering all over the place in a panic.

“No. Not right now, idiot,” said Leeson, waving Jacob away from hovering over me.

“It’s coming up,” I said, softly. My voice stilted. “I didn’t want you.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. I just… I mean, it’s not a big deal or anything and I know how to handle them, but I just wanted you to know that I didn’t expect anything from any of you. I still barely know you, right?”

I chuckled, though it sounded more unhinged than it probably should’ve.

Leeson cocked his head. “Are you all right, Vera?”

“Yeah. I’m fine. I’m great. I just…”

“Are you asking us to help you… through your heat?”

I stammered. “No. I mean, maybe, but right now I don’t think so. No. I just, I didn’t want you to think when it did happen that I planned this or something. I know most omegas now are onsuppressants more of the time, but I had a bad reaction, so I’ve mostly just been braving them?—”

“Alone?” Jacob’s eyes widened.

“It’s been all right.” If feeling like your entire body was on fire with need could be in that category of all right. “Like I said, I just didn’t want you guys to assume that I was going to trap you or anything with my heat. I understand if you think that because I did find out that it was coming so soon or somehow used my heat scent or whatever to lure you guys to me as some of the only alphas on campus or something.”

It sounded so stupid as I said it.

The looks on their faces only confirmed it.

Jacob’s lip curled, blinking as if he was in some kind of shock. Why did I think that this was what they were going to think? Who in their right mind would think that this was the reason I ran into them and then promptly ran away, insisting that I didn’t want them even as my scent matches for a short yet potent period of time?

Silas simply told me that it would. And I believed him.

I believed him as the head of this pack.

My cheeks heated as I realized just how swayed I was.

“It was the day I met you, Lee, that I found out and I was kind of a mess that day as I am sure you noticed,” I said, meekly.

Leeson still stared at me like I was going crazy. “That’s not how heats work, Vera.”

At least someone knew that.

“And that day I met you on the quad. I thought you were the most stunning, beautiful girl I’d ever seen in my entire life.”

“Woah,” said Jacob. “Way to one-up me on the compliments, man.”

Leeson shrugged, not looking over to him. He was completely focused on me.

“We wouldn’t ever believe that, Vera. No matter what you decide when the time comes,” said Leeson.
