I nodded.

“My name is Claudia. We got you now. Your omega is really on top of you right now I’m sure.”

I paused, searching for that feeling as I had back at the game, my omega sitting in my chest that caused her to get excited about her alphas doing well in the game or wanting to growl when another girl put her arms around Silas.

Silas.

Everything was quiet. “She’s gone.”

“I don’t think that’s true at all,” Claudia whispered. She hugged me tighter. I don’t think I ever had a hug like this from anyone. Not my mom. Certainly, never from a stranger.

But she didn’t feel like a stranger. She felt a little like Leeson. Pack.

“Sh. It’s all right. She’ll be back soon. She’s just resting in this part of you that might feel unnatural for a bit leaving you to feel empty. I promise you’ll be alright.”

I wasn’t so sure.

“Don’t worry,” said Claudia. “Take some deep breaths. Your alpha did not reject you. Vera? Are you listening to me? You have not been rejected?”

It was as if the biggest breath finally let go in my chest, though it left emptiness. I wasn’t sure about that.

“Are you sore? Thirsty? Hungry?”

I heard Leeson and Jacob start to move around the kitchen as if at the ready.

“I feel like my body hates me.”

“That’s just your omega. Sometimes they can be a little bitch, can’t they?”

I couldn’t help it. Out of all the things I expected Leeson’s mother to say to me, that wasn’t it. Pulling back, I let out a small watery chuckle.

“There we are. Yeah, we’re going to be okay. Now let’s get you settled for the day.”

“I should go back to my room,” I said, looking around the apartment again that looked exactly how it always did aside from Leeson’s mom here and another sort of emptiness.

I could tell immediately that Silas wasn’t there.

I still didn't know what to think of that. It was just like my mom had told me all along. Alphas were meant to hurt.

“Is that what you want to do?” Claudia asked, eyebrows raised.

I pressed my lips together. I knew that no matter what I said, she would take it seriously.

I shook my head.

“Then let me and these boys take care of you.”

“But—”

“Boys, get your omega something good to drink. Not water. Tea or coffee?” she asked.

“Um,” I glanced at Leeson. “Tea would be nice.”

Both alphas went to work, leaving me back with Claudia as we walked over to settle on the couch together. She started to pad the space with throw pillows and more blankets than I ever remembered being here in the living space.

“Don’t you worry about Silas. He just takes a little while to come around.”

“So I’ve been told.”
