“It’s settled then. I’ll have a local pack come pick you up. Makaii is on the phone with Alpha Sanders now. He’s the closest pack to where you’re located. From there, we are sending the private plane to get you. Right now, I need to see you, and I want you by my side where I know you are safe. Let’s get you inside the wards of Aisling, and then we will discuss …the other stuff.”

She let out a long, cleansing breath. It was the right call, but she couldn’t be the one to admit failure, to admit she was in over her head, and Ava knew that. The uniquely magical boundaries surrounding Aisling would keep anyone and everyone out who wasn’t in their pack. It was the safest place, and she knew it.

“Yes, Alpha.”

“Put Keoni back on the phone. I’ll see you tonight, Bai. Please stay safe and don’t leave Keoni’s side.”

She hung up, dropping her head to her hands, barely listening to the one-sided conversation with Keoni and his brother, Makaii. She was so over today, and she couldn’t wait to crawl into her bed and sleep. Ava was right. She needed a girl’s night to eat ice cream, have a good cry, and be near her best friend.

“Alright. Let’s make sure the Suburban is empty. They’re going to tow it to the local pack and scrap it. They’re sendingsomeone to pick us up and take us to a local landing strip. Nas should be here in like three hours.”

“Three hours? Wow. The new plane must be hella jacked.”

“With all the Alliance meetings, they needed something bigger and faster. I haven’t been trained to fly this one yet, but I bet it’s a lot easier than the old one we had.”

She lost track of the rest of their conversation, ignoring everything they said, the buzzing in her head about to explode.

“Nas? Nassau? Your friend?”

Keoni glanced at her in excitement. “Yup. Which means I bet I can get him to let me fly back.”

“Why him? Don’t you have an actual pilot?”

He frowned. “We’re all trained and certified pilots, but Nas is the best we have, and he’s been flying them to all their meetings. I promise it’s safe as hell. Probably more than a commercial flight.”

He misconstrued her sudden panic for fear of flying. No. Not Nassau. He was one of the two possibilities for her mate. Eventually, she had broken down and asked Ava for their names, refusing to learn much of anything else. But she hadn’t forgotten their names.

Nassau or Isaiah. It was one of them.

Fuck.

“There’s not another pilot? Didn’t Zhair fly to get Rosaleen? Can’t he come?”

“Yeah, and that was a disaster. He struggles with landings, and in the newer plane—”

“The newer plane will be easier. It will practically land itself. Call him back and change pilots before they leave. It can’t be him. Please.”

He stared at her hard before realization dawned on his face. He couldn’t hide the sadness for his friend that flitted across his face when he picked up his phone again. Hands clenched at herside, she waited with bated breath as Keoni attempted to explain to Makaii without success.

“Umm…we need Zhair to come… No, not additionally…as the pilot…umm.”

She could hear Makaii’s gruff, no-nonsense tone on the phone and knew Keoni would get them nowhere. Makaii wouldn’t change his mind for no good reason. Shit.

Grabbing the phone from Keoni, she tried a different approach. “Hey, Makaii. Are you still around Ava? It’s important. Let me talk to her.”

It was a few minutes, but when Ava’s breathless voice filled her ears, she knew she’d fix it, and no one would question her.

“Bai, what’s wrong?”

“Makaii is sending the plane, but I need a different pilot.”

“A different pilot… who is the…oh. Shit. You’re right. Pause.”

She heard Ava order for Makaii to send someone else, that she needed Nassau to fly tomorrow for an important meeting, and he needed his rest tonight. He didn’t argue with her, and she knew it would be changed.

“Okay, Bai. Come home. Love you.”

“Love you, too.”
