“She’s a free spirit. Has wild ideas, thinks on her feet, but smart as hell. My uncle is the Director of Equine Acquisitions and Training for our horses. Runs that whole side of our operations. Passed down through his family for generations. When they mated, she had so many ideas to make it modern, make it more efficient. The plane was her idea. She said we needed to make more connections to get our brand out there, but my dad is…well, you know my dad didn’t want us outside the pack. So, according to the stories my mom tells, Auntie Ife had a whole business presentation prepared. Showed him how the plane was worth the investment, how it could be used in emergencies, to bring in supplies, to meet other distant packs without the danger of humans. She got him to agree to let her train as the pilot and became certified to teach as well. She loved it. And she taught Nas and all of us.”

“She seems like a lot of fun.”

“She has to be. Her husband, my uncle, is the most uptight and serious man. An eye for business, and no time for playing around. But they make it work.”

The sudden quiet between them at that reflection was interrupted by Gio’s snoring, and Keoni fell into an uncharacteristic silence while she stared out the window, hoping neither of her possible mates were waiting for them at the landing strip.

Chapter 6

November 12

5:45 p.m.

“This…this right here is my favorite thing to do with you.”

“It’s been happening a lot lately.”

Bailey picked at Ava’s hair, pulling the loose cascades of braids just right. “But still not enough. After this? When will we be able to get dressed up anymore? I’ll never get to see you throw your ass again.”

“Are we really mourning that? Seems a bit dramatic.”

“I’m definitely mourning it. You’re an Alpha now, and the world would be scandalized if they saw the way you can make your asscheeks move.”

“Don’t worry. I’m still making use of my skills on the daily.”

“Gross. I do NOT need to picture that.”

“Makaii greatly appreciates it.” Ava laughed softly, adding the long, dangly earrings, and there was a pause when their eyes met in the mirror.

“You are stunning, bestie.”

“So then, why do I feel so nervous?”

“Because, unlike me, you care about people and making them happy. Everything you did in literally three months is wild. I can barely plan out my week, and you’ve planned out a whole newcity, the future of two huge packs and the most powerful coven in the world.”

“What if they hate it? What if…”

“There’s nothing to hate. And if they do, Makaii can do that death stare thing he does, they’ll shit themselves, and you can light them on fire.”

“You’re ridiculous.” But Ava giggled. “You’re right, though. All the feedback so far has been positive, and we’ve had so many applications for the storefronts. People have been really excited about this new adventure.”

“Not adventure. It’s a way of life. You built a fucking city. In three months. And a house—”

“None of it is finished. There’s still so much to do.”

“Not things you should worry about today. You are the star—”

“Not star—”

“You’re absolutely the star, and I’m here to make sure you own it. Even if you’re crazier than I am, to do three ceremonies at once. But no one expected anything less.” She did a little shimmy in the mirror. “Today is your mating ceremony! It’s going to be official. And your Alpha presentation. And opening day for NahleCheile. Aghhhhh. Could you imagine all of this happening a year ago?”

“A year ago, Alpha Thomas had given me a year to help him take down Tuisa and give him a baby, and now look at us.”

“Yeah. May he rot in hell with a giant pineapple shoved up his ass.”

“And a hot rod through his peehole.”

“Amen.” She mocked a serious prayer and a bow, and they erupted in laughter, only able to stop when there was a knock at the door.
