“That’s what I thought.” She leaned back, considering his comment. “But that sounds like a good idea. Otherwise, my dad will make me go work the ranch again.”

He looked surprised, but relieved, and by then, Gio had already wandered off to the dance floor to find the girls.

“Guess me and you have a date tomorrow, Trav. Can’t wait to put you on your ass.”

Chapter 10

Tuesday, November 16

11:40 p.m.

Putting her Jeep in gear, she backed out of the bar parking lot and headed back home. The chilly November air blew through her messy bun, and she was thinking about leaving her dad a note that she was going to train with the warriors in the morning. That meant she could sleep later, otherwise, he’d wake her up at six again.

So, when an arm slipped across her chest from behind and pressed her into the seat, she almost had a heart attack. Slamming on her brakes, she skidded to a stop in the dark stretch of the road, and she gasped for breath, pulling at the forearm that was slipping up to her throat.

“Don’t struggle, Bailey. Don’t want to get blood on these nice seats.”

In the silent darkness of the night, she felt the steel of the blade against her throat, and she tried not to panic. Her nails dug into his forearm, but she froze, waiting to see what he would do.

“You’re going to drive out of the pack. Don’t stop and don’t link anyone. I’d hate for any of your friends to get hurt. Do you understand?”

“I need you. I need someone. He’s in my car. He’s forcing me to drive out of the pack—”

She had reached for her gear shift, slowly following his directions as she linked Travis, but his hand closed over her forearm, snapping a thin, silver bracelet on her wrist. Immediately, she felt weak and breathless.

Silver? What the fuck.

Unable to mindlink or to shift, she knew she didn’t stand a chance in this state, especially against an Alpha wolf.

“You can keep trying to elude me, but you can’t escape your destiny. This is meant to be. Stop fighting, and everything will work out for me, for you, and for my pack.”

His rambling was wild and erratic, but she didn’t pay any attention to his words. She kept thinking, ‘I can’t leave pack lands. I can’t leave pack lands. I can’t leave pack lands.’

So, when she reached the fork in the path right before the exit road, she took the right side instead. Left went out, and right went to the back corner of the pack, to her home away from home: the gym and Ava’s old house. She prayed he didn’t notice, and between the cover of darkness and his ignorance of their pack, she gave herself more time to be found. While he went on about her future, her mind raced.

The dim lights of the closed gym loomed in front of her, and she pulled into the empty parking lot. His arm tightened around her neck, and she could feel his breath puff angrily in her ear.

“I said don’t stop. What are you doing?”

“The silver…I’m going to be sick. Please.”

Skidding to a stop, she opened the door and dropped to her knees in the dirt and dry heaved. She could tell he was unsure and hesitant, but she had to put on the best show possible. She just needed to waste enough time for someone to find her.

She turned her head to the side, away from him, and eyed the front door of the gym. Only about twenty yards away, and if shedistracted him, she thought she could make it. She had the code, and he didn’t. She just needed a headstart.

“Come on. Back in the car, or I’ll knock you out and carry you.”

“I’m coming, just can’t go fast. I’m so nauseous.” She stood up, doubled over, and limped over to the front of her car to lean on the hood. “Can you get me a water bottle out of the trunk? I need something on my stomach other than beer.”

His growl of frustration echoed through the night, but he stomped over to her trunk and swung open the door to rummage around in the mess she kept back there. The second he ducked down, she took off running.

Her heart pounded in her ears, but the sweetest sound she ever heard was the chime of the code being approved and the lock unclicking. Jerking open the door, she pulled it closed, flipping the manual bolt.

Just in time.

As soon as the bolt slid over, his whole body slammed into the glass door. He still wore the mask from before, and when he pounded his fist against the glass, the whole wall shook.

Shit. Without wasting another moment, she took off running towards the safety door to the underground rooms. This door was unbreachable unless you had explosives, and if she could get down there, she would be safe.
