“Stay. Please.”

“I can’t. Sue will have a fit.”

“I’m going to be so hungover in the morning.” He presses his head against my hand. “I’m going to miss you.”

“I’m going to miss you, too.”

“Everything is spinning.” He sighs. “Fuck! Everything sucks.”

“I love you.” I whisper. “I’ll probably always love you.”

“You’ll find someone else. Just don’t settle. Just promise me you won’t pick another asshole.”

“I don’t want another guy.”

“I really am sorry, Abbey.”

“I know.” I lean down to plant a kiss on his forehead. My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I know that means the car is here. “I have to go.”

“We’re still friends. Okay.”

“Haley doesn’t want me around.”

“Fuck that.”

“Wes. I’m sorry, but it’s probably for the best.”

“No.”

“I have to go.”

“We’ll talk tomorrow.” He says. “I’m not losing you completely. I can’t,”

“Goodnight, Wes.”

“Goodnight, Abbey.”

I walk down the bunks. I pass Ben and Nicolas in the common area.

“You really did a number on him.” Nicolas speaks to me, his voice barely penetrating the fog of pain I am existing in. “I’ve never seen him so torn up over a girl, and Haley and him fought all the time.”

“Nick.” Ben butts in. “She isn’t to blame for this.”

“Then who is?”

“Haley, obviously.”

“Um. Goodnight.” Is all I can say as I walk off the bus. My words too tangled, too hurt. My whole body feels broken.

I cry all the way back to my hotel room. I open the door and find Sue waiting for me with a tray of food.

“What happened?”

“Wes knocked up his ex-girlfriend, and now it’s over.”

“Well, shit. Please tell me you wore a condom.” I just throw myself on the bed and cry into a pillow. “I understand you’re upset, but you still have to eat.”

“No.”
