I finish eating and motion for him to get up. He does, taking a seat on the couch.

“Movie?” He asks.

“Sure.” I walk down to my bunk and get my phone. I have like a dozen more messages from Skylar.

I sit down next to Wes and look through them.

Skylar is worried about me. He is concerned I’m having a bad comedown.

“It was rough for a little.” I reply. “But I’m feel much better now. How are you?”

“I’m okay, have you been sleeping it off?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m really sorry I didn’t go after you. I was just too fucking high.”

“It’s okay, really.”

“Meet up at the venue?”

“Sure.” I reply and put my phone to the side.

Wes puts his arm around me, and I melt into him. It is hard not to. We watch a bit of a movie curled up together like we did before everything went bad. It feels nice, but I tell myself nothing has changed. We still can’t be together.

When we arrive at the venue, Wes stretches and gets up.

“I need a cigarette. Will you be joining me?”

I shake my head no, biting my lip. I didn’t want him to leave but it’s for the best.

“Nothing has changed, has it?” He asks.

I shrug.

“Well, I guess, you know where to find me.” He looks away from me.

He starts to walk to the exit of the bus.

“Thank you, for everything.”

He turns and looks at me. “I made a promise. I fully intend on keeping it. See you around, Abbey.”

“Abbey.” Sue comments, like she has the right. “If I had to choose between Skylar and Wes, I’d pick Wes.”

“Good to know.” I fight back tears.

I miss him already, but it is the right thing to do. This is the best. He deserves better than me.

“I’m just saying the label may have picked a bad choice.”

“They normally do.”

“Yeah.” She pauses. “If you’re going to spiral out of control, we are going to need to cover your tracks better. You need to tell me everything you’re doing or did so I can be prepared for damage control.”

“No lecture on not doing heroin?”

“Would it do any good?” She asks, and I shrug. “Don’t shoot up. It’s not worth it. You’ll ruin your whole life. The label will force you into rehab or into a conservatorship. Or even worse, kick you off the label for good. You could ruin your whole career doing that shit.”
