“I must look so pathetic.”

“You look like a victim of something unfortunate.”

“I just want to get out of here.” I pull on the IV. “I just want to disappear.”

“Did they say when you will be discharged?”

“No.” I shake my head, wiping at my face. “They are waiting on some test results, and I have to talk to the police, but my memory is kind of hazy.”

“That’s to be expected. Move over.” I slide to the side of the bed, and he sits on it next to me. “I’m afraid you’re going to have to get used to having me around. I’m feeling slightly over-protective.” He puts his arm around my shoulder. “You’re my best friend and all.”

“Do you still love me?” I ask in a whisper.

He looks over at me, surprised. “Yes. Of course.” He plays with the ends of my hair, gently.

I love him so much. I just want him. If I had just been with him, none of this would’ve happened. I tried to run from my feelings to protect him, and it just ended up with us both hurting.

“Wes.” I speak up after a minute.

“Yes, Abbey?”

“I want to try.”

“Try what?”

“Us.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes. I want to try to be better and try to be the girl you deserve. I’m tired of being miserable and ending up in these situations. I just want to be happy, or at least as happy as I can be. I want to be with you.”

“Abbey, you’re already the girl I deserve. I’m going to make you so happy.” He says. “I promise, I’m going to make you feel safe and protected and happy. I’m going to take good care of you.”

“I believe you.” I whisper, leaning my head against his chest. “I love you, Wes.”

“I love you too.” He smiles gently and kisses the side of my face. “We are going to be so great together.”

Sue comes back with some food a few minutes later. Wes is flipping through the channels on the hospital TV.

“I got sandwiches and some apple slices.”

“Let’s talk prizes first.”

“So, we are back to that.” Sue rolls her eyes. “What did you have in mind?”

“I get to stay on your bus tonight.”

“I mean, if you want, but we have a hotel room.” She shrugs.

“We get our own room.” He replies quickly.

“She has to eat dinner, and I get to make the official statement about you two.”

Wes looks at me. I shrug. I’m fine with her making a statement, and I will eat dinner, like I have been.

“Deal.”

After I eat, a nurse comes and brings me some pain meds. They are prescribing me some to take with me, just for a few days.
