It’s a fucking sandwich. The carbs. The meat. The calories in this thing. I’m going to feel so bloated after I eat it.

I take the smallest bites I can and chew it slowly.

“Bigger bites get it over with faster.” Wes says.

“Bigger bites will make my stomach look bigger.”

“Darling, I don’t know enough to dispute that, but you’re fucking tiny as it is. A little more meat on your bones isn’t going to hurt.”

“Until I have a food bump, and everyone thinks it’s a baby bump.” I say faintly.

He laughs at that, and I smile in response to his laugh. It’s warm and soothing.

“And how many baby bumps have you had over the years?”

“Quite a few.”

“So, what’s another baby rumor? You can bum a cigarette off me and a bottle of booze and really get them riled up.”

I laugh at that and take another bite, slightly bigger than before.

Wes had finished his sandwich by the time I was barely halfway done with mine. I feel full, and I hate it. Empty felt better. Hollow felt good.

“Sue.” I say, almost pleading.

“The whole thing.” She says plainly. I want to argue that it’s not good to overeat either, but I know I’ll lose that battle.

“Halfway done.” Wes says, getting up and putting his plate in the sink.

I look up at him, expecting to be met with a face of annoyance or pity, but he looks at me with a face full of kindness and compassion. I almost want to cry. No one has ever looked at me like they cared about me before.

“Think about it as a game.” Wes says, sitting back down next to me. “You aren’t eating, you are playing a game and finishing all of it is winning.”

“Winning what?”

“I don’t know. What do you want?” He asks.

“I want to hang out on your bus.” I respond carefully.

“No.” Sue says plainly.

“What’s an hour or two on my bus?” Wes challenges her. I look up.

Sue looks a bit taken aback by Wes challenging her. I don’t think she thought he would stand up for me. I know I sure didn’t think he would, but I can’t help but smile a little at the fact. Wes cared about me.

“I have to keep an eye on her.” Sue says back.

“You didn’t keep an eye on her last night.” He says. He has her there. “I’ll watch her.”

“You’ll watch her pee?” Sue raises an eyebrow.

“I won’t use the bathroom.” I shoot back.

“Fine. One hour. Before sound check tomorrow. Two if you eat dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow without complaining.”

“Deal.” I say with a small smile on my face before taking the next bite.

Wes puts on another movie once I’m done eating. We curl up together, his arm around my shoulder and my head against his. He takes my hand in his part way through the movie and rubs little circles on my palm.
