“Wes.” I breathe out his name softly. “I think…”

“I know. I’m sorry. I will behave from now on.”

“No. I mean.” I pause and look at the ground. “I would love nothing more than to be your girlfriend, but I think you deserve someone better.”

“Better?” He questions. “Better than a talented, goddess of a woman. I’m not sure that exists.”

“Better than someone who throws up on your bus, who wants to cry after every meal, someone who doesn’t have panic attacks. You deserve someone better than me.” I blurt out.

He nods his head, and my heart feels like it’s going to break into a million pieces. He finally sees it. Me saying it out loud finally made him see it.

“I like you, Abbey. I like all of you. That includes the good and the bad. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’d love for you not to want to throw up or cry after every meal. I desperately want to help you overcome that. And I hate the fact you have panic attacks, but only because I would like you to be happy all the time, not scared or sad. But despite those things, I still like you.”

My heart is pounding in my chest now, and tears threaten to spill out of my eyes.

“I don’t know how you can like me.” I comment quietly.

“There are so many reasons why I like you, but the ultimate reason is I just do. You can’t help who you feel attracted to, and from the first night, I’ve been attracted to you, maybe even longer.”

“I’m attracted to you too.” I look up at him. He smiles at me.

“Come on. We can talk about this later. Tonight, let’s just have some fun. We’ll get fucked up and enjoy ourselves.” I nod, and he takes my hand, pulling me to the door.

We make our way out to his bus. There are a few people standing around outside of it. I spot Dennis and Aaron talking with some pretty girls. Wes leads me onto his bus, where a small crowd has formed. I see Skylar talking to a girl. He looks my way for a moment before turning his attention back to the girl in front of him. Dean is standing in the corner, talking to Ben.

Wes grabs a bottle of vodka from the counter and leads me to the doorway leading to the bunk area. He leans against it, and I stand next to him. He puts his arm around my shoulder and takes a sip from the bottle, passing it to me. I take a sip before passing it back.

“So, Abbey.” Ben starts from beside us. “Dean says he’s been your touring bassist for the last three years.”

“Yeah.” I nod as Wes takes another sip from the bottle. “He is the best bassist a girl could have.”

“I’ll be sure to tell Dennis you said that.” Ben laughs.

Dean smiles at me. He is a great guy to have around. We weren’t super close, but for the last three years, I’ve been sure to make it to him on tour with me. He is one of the few guys I feel safe being around. He has never once flirted with me or made a move on me and has always been nice to me.

“Nice to see you out and about again.” Dean says to me. He eyes Wes, who takes another sip from the bottle.

Skylar suddenly approaches us. “Hey." He nods to the group. “It’s not every day Abbey Dark joins the after-party.” He smiles.

“She was on your bus the other night.” Wes retorts, passing me the bottle. I take a small sip.

“True. It’s nice to see you again, Wes. Feeling Scars is such a great song. I never thought I’d hear it live.”

“Now you have.” Wes says, taking the bottle from me. He takes another sip.

“Saw Haley the other day. She says hi.” Skylar pipes in.

“Fuck.” Ben swears under his breath.

Wes just shrugs. “Hope she is doing well.” He taps my shoulder. “I’m going to go have a smoke.” He pulls his arm from around me, takes another sip from the bottle, and passes it back to me. “I’ll be back.”

I nod, feeling the coolness of not having his presence next to me now.

“So, Wes and you?” Skylar probes to see what his friend thinks of me.

“Just friends.” I answer, and he nods understandingly.

“Wes is a good guy to have in your corner. Very protective and loyal.” Ben adds, as though someone had asked him.
