But I am really falling for him, despite my better judgment. I can’t help myself, but it’s happening whether I want it or not. It's just so damn hard not to when he whisks me away to spots like these, gazes into my eyes the way he does, and hangs on to every word I say, no matter how trivial.

The meal is jaw-droppingly good. Lobsters and oysters and caviar and wine. Fit for royalty.

Fit for the king and queen of New York.

It’s only when we’re finished that I dare utter to Damon what’s been plaguing my head.

“So,” I whisper as the lights of New York flicker below us, “what’s going to happen next?”

“What do you mean?” Damon asks, politely nodding at the server to take away our plates.

“You know… between you and Handsome Jack? What happens now that you two had that big falling out?”

Damon shakes his head. “It wasn’t a falling out,” he says.

“Well, it seemed like one to me,” I reply. “I may not be a gangster and all that, but I have been a teenage girl at high school. Trust me, I know a feud when I see one.”

Damon smiles. “Everything is fine,” he says. “Don’t even give it a second's thought. I have everything under control.”

I want to believe him. I want to believe that confident, nonchalant swagger of the man.

But I have a sinking feeling that everything isnotunder control.

But what can I do? I am a nobody next to these kinds of powerful men.

I have no choice but to trust Damon.

In the elevatorback down from the restaurant floor, it’s just us alone.

Damon takes a step back so that he’s behind me. He kisses my neck. I lean back into him.

Then his lips go to my ear.

“I want to tell you something,” he whispers to me.

“What is it?” I ask, closing my eyes and forgetting all about Handsome Jack and that meeting.

“There has been one thought I’ve had all dinner,” he continues.

“Yeah?”

There’s a long pause before he speaks.

“It’s the most impossible thought in the world, especially to a man like me with my past and my cold heart, but I do believe I’m falling in love with you, Ava.”

I turn around. Looking at his face, it’s clear he’s not joking.

He is deadly serious.

He is falling in love with me.

And I can tell he’s waiting for my response with every fiber of his being.

The powerful gangster falling in love with the former cheerleader...

“This may be the most impossible thought with me,” I reply, “considering this all started as some kind of blackmail, but I do believe I am also falling in love with you, Damon.”
