“Wait one second,” Daddy said.

“Do we have to?” I asked.

“Just take a moment and be still, Ava. Really listen to the peace and quiet.”

And I did. I made myself feel the breeze. I made myself hear the birdsong.

“Now,” Daddy finally said with a chuckle. “Make a wish.”

And I did. But this wish wasn’t one of the many on myVery Important list; this wish was much more simple than any of those.

Be happy with Daddy forever.

My lips moved with the wish in a silent mutter.

I held my breath as if that would somehow help the wish work.

“You can open your eyes now,” Daddy whispered.

And I did.

My eyes met Daddy’s. He was looking at me with all the affection in the world. I gripped his hands tighter.

“I love you, Ava,” he said.

“I love you, Daddy.”

And then, as if responding to the wish I had just made, a butterfly fluttered between Daddy and me. One wing was blue, and the other green. It spun and twirled between us, just like how I had been doing in the meadow moments before.

I gasped at the sight of the multi-colored insect.

It was magical.

“Daddy, look!”

“I can see it. Look at its colors. It’s just like you, Ava. Your own special butterfly.”

“Yes, it is just like me.”

“You must’ve made a really special wish, Ava.”

I smiled.

Yes, I did make a really special wish.

Be happy with Daddy forever.

I stumblethrough the front door of my dad’s house and immediately announce my presence by dropping my bag with a very long groan, and not without good reason.

All that way for nothing, just to come back home empty handed like a total idiot.

All that way for just some crazy-ass proposal from a scary gangster businessman that I will never -not in a million years- accept.

I hear movement from the kitchen before Dad’s head pokes around the door.

“Ava? You’re back?”

There’s so much relief in his voice. I bet he was thinking Damon would’ve cut me up into little pieces and fed them to his sharks by now. To be honest, I think I would rather prefer that to being forced to be the crime boss’ mistress for months.
