“I wouldn’t expect any less from you,” Joshua replied with a knowing smirk.

“Thank you for bringing me here,” I said to him quietly. I was being honest. Sincere.

And my godfather could see that.

“My pleasure,” he replied. “Anything for you, Damon Penmayne.”

I glanced around the busy street. Here we were, right in the middle of downtown Chicago. My godfather was treating me as an equal. He had money, influence, and power, and being in close proximity to that made me feel part of his world.

I felt on top of the fucking world.

A car trundled past us, close to the sidewalk. It was going slow. Too slow for the traffic of a busy city.

Black and sleek. Tinted windows. Unassuming. Secretive.

I should’ve paid more attention to the car. I should’ve been alerted to the suspicious vehicle.

But I wasn’t.

And I still blame myself for it.

As it came within yards of us, the tinted window of the car rolled down. A gun emerged from inside.

It all happened so fast, and yet so slow. Almost in slow motion.

I saw the black gun aim at us.

I saw the man holding it.

I saw his face. I saw it as clear as day. Like someone had taken a snapshot of it.

I saw the snarl on his lips and the triumphant, feverish look in his eyes as he looked at Joshua and me.

And before I could react to all this, I saw a burst of light from the gun. And I heard the sharp bang that deafened me and that shattered the perfect day.

And, next to me, Joshua crumpled as the car sped away, now a hell of a lot faster than any of the other cars on the road.

No, no, no.

And I was turning toward Joshua.

And I saw the blood pouring from his chest. I saw the bullet-shaped hole in the place where his heart would be.

And I realized that this was a drive-by shooting. This was intentional. The man in the tinted car was intent on shooting my godfather.

And he had succeeded.

A scream emerged from deep within me as I looked at the man who I adored.

“Joshua!”

But it was too late.

Joshua was lifeless. His eyes were wide open. His mouth was slack. His breathing had stopped.

My godfather was dead.

And I saw it all.
