“Drop those debts, Damon.”

He’s back on it, is he? What has Olivia told him?

I exhale. “Only when those debts are repaid. Trust me, Spencer, theywillbe repaid. I have offered Ava Matson a very good deal that I know she will accept.”

“Yeah, I really do hope you know what you’re doing, Damon.”

As soon as my brother’s front door locks shut behindme, I receive a call on my personal phone. Only a few people have this important number.

And it’s exactly who I’m hoping it will be.

A very good deal...

I pick it up and smile with victory before I speak.

“Hello, Ava. Ready to reconsider my offer?”

Despite my insistencethat I can drive myself, Damon still gets his driver to pick me up from home. I don’t even need to tell the crime boss my address; he is already somehow well aware of where I am currently living.

And that makes me so freaking scared.

I guess his possession of me has already started...

“I’ll send my man to collect you now,” Damon tells me just before he hangs up. The certainty behind his deep voice, and the urgency it fills me with, instantly compels me to spring out of bed and start to get ready for whatever I’m about to let myself in for here.

I was not expecting all this to happen so fast.

What the hell do you even wear when one of the most powerful men in the country orders you to his house at midnight?

I guess I gotta wear something that is a strong combo of professionalism, authority, and confidence; I am meeting a man to negotiate a deal, after all. A veryscaryman.

I opt for apantsuit I have in the back of my wardrobe.

I really, really hope I don’t look like Hillary Clinton in this.

Despite my concerns, the pantsuit is modern and stylish. The blazer makes me look like a qualified woman. A light blue blouse, which matches one of my eyes. I have to say, it’s not too bad.

Okay, Ava, you can do this.

Negotiate. Stand firm. Be professional. Don’t let him roll over me.

Help Dad.

The driver comes promptly and, before I even know it, I’m sitting in the back of another one of Damon Penmayne’s limousines.

Okay, all I’m going to do is talk to the man. Talk over the offer. Nothing has been agreed. Yet.

I’m definitelynotgoing to commit to anything without a hell of a lot of thought, and I am especially not going to agree to something that might mean I’m effectively signing my body over to the criminal.

I know that’s what he wants though, and it certainly seems like Damon Penmayne is someone who always gets what he wants.

He’s told me exactly that in no uncertain terms...

The limousine takes me out of the main bit of Crystal River and onto unfamiliar roads into the thick woods that ring my hometown. All the winding way to Damon’s mansion. I’ve only heard about this place before but have never actually seen it with my own eyes. It’s spoken about in whispers in Crystal River.
