“Have fun working for a man who’s a psycho?” I ask the suited security as we both pant after our little altercation.

He grunts back at me.

Ugh.

“What a riveting and witty conversationalist,” I reply to his incoherent grumble.

I lean back in my chair and keep my eyes peeled on Damon’s office door. I cross my legs to show how serious I am.

I can wait here all day if that’s what it takes...

“Nothing is going to happen,” the pretty brunette secretary smugly coos to me from behind her desk next to the penthouse office door. “That was your one and only chance to see Mr. Penmayne, and you blew it.”

The secretary and I have been engaged in a tense Cold War these last few days, ever since I first managed to smuggle my way through security downstairs to plonk myself down in this reception seat. It has been a Mexican stand-off of epic proportions between her and me as I’ve waited and waited and waited and waited and she’s done nothing but glare at me from across the room, completely damn powerless to do anything about the annoying small-town blonde girl in her reception, no matter how many security guards she calls up.

“Mind your own business,” I retort back to the preppy receptionist. “Protest always works. Power to the people, and all that. Iamgoing to meet Damon Penmayne, mark my words.”

She simply rolls her eyes at that. “Sure. You have fun with your delusions.”

I stick out my tongue at her.

I’m not going to be negative. I am going to see Damon properly. This insane not-moving-until-I-meet-him protest in his office will be worth it, I am sure of it.

I hope.

As if responding to my thoughts, the door to the office suddenly swings open, and a man who isn’t Damon Penmayne steps out. I must’ve not noticed this guy when hecame in with Damon from the elevator. I’m guessing he must be good at blending into the background. He’s got short red hair and striking green eyes.

And he looks directly at me with those striking green eyes. He is cold. I get that vibe from him. I see a man that I know has seen some real shit. You probably would have to witness some crazy things if you work for a man like Damon Penmayne.

And I’m suddenly very terrified.

What have I let myself in for here?

“Mr. Penmayne will see you now,” the man says in a dark, slow voice, looking toward me.

I gulp.

“Me?”

The man nods.

“Yes,you. Mr. Penmayne will like to talk to you right now.”

I am actually going to meet this guy? Right now?

I look at the secretary. She’s looking fearful.

And I realize she’s fearful forme.

Oh, God. This is all starting to feel very, very real.

And very,verydangerous.

DAMON

And,just like that, the girl who had somehow stopped my heart mere moments ago strolls proudly into my office: her blonde hair trailing behind her, and her mismatched eyes locked firmly onto me, and her head held high.
