Well, I’m not giving it to him. Especially not after this weird abrupt turnaround.

I cross my arms.

“Goodnight, Damon.”

See? I can be equally as matter-of-fact back.

He shuts the door.

And I crumble onto the soft bed, my mind spinning at a million miles per hour.

Angry. Confused. Sad.

I really don’t know what to make of this place. Damon is so hot and cold to me from minute to minute. He shows me his vintage car and his pride and joy brewery like a little excited boy, and then he flicks back to bachelor gangster mode as quickly as possible. I can’t read him.

I just feel really alone.

“Hello, Dad?”

My hand gently pushes against the tough front door of my dad’s house, and it swings open with a familiar creak. It’s only when I step into the place that I can hear him from the kitchen.

His soft, sad voice.

“Ava?”

“Hey.”

I head straight for the kitchen, finding Dad standing by the window, gazing out at the backyard. With a quick pivot, he turns to meet my gaze as I enter.

“Where have you been Ava? It’s like you’ve gone completely silent these last few days.”

I sigh reluctantly and take a seat.

“I’m working on clearing those debts, Dad. That’s where I’ve been.”

He frowns. “Doing what, exactly?”

“I can’t say,” I reply, shaking my head. “I really can’t say,but it’s working. I’m going to make sure all those debts are erased completely.”

Dad nods slowly and turns his stare back out the window, avoiding my eyes. “Should I know what you’re doing?” he asks me in a quiet voice.

“No. I can’t, Dad. I can’t tell you.”

“Okay.”

We stay like that for a few more silent minutes until I eventually pick up the courage to leave.

“Bye, Dad. I might be gone for some time.”

He doesn’t turn from the window.

“Bye, Ava.”

As I walk down the hallway to the front door, trying to hold back my tears, I message Damon to send his driver to pick me up. I had thought I’d be here for longer, but now I see that there’s a new chasm that’s opened up between Dad and me. He doesn’t know exactly what I’m doing, but I amprettysure he can fit the pieces together.
