“I want to kiss you, Ava,” he snarls. I can smell the alcohol on his breath.

“Go away,” I reply. I start to turn, but I can already see the man’s arms rising. He can easily get at me from this close.

Why have I allowed himself to get this fucking close?

“Ava, I want you...”

“Step away from her.”

That’s not Luke.

That is from a deep, stern voice in the darkness. I recognize that voice immediately.

It’s Damon.

And he doesn’t look happy.

He’s turned up...

Luke turns to the man as well.

Damon is alone. No August beside him.

I have never been so thankful to see the gangster’s face.

“I’m not scared of you, Penmayne.” Luke’s voice is seemingly less slurred now, like he realizes that this has turned into a very different situation for him from the one happening a moment ago. He straightens up, sensing the threat.

Luke towers above me.

He’s a big guy.

But so is Damon.

“That’s a foolish thing to say,” Damon replies coolly. “You should very well be scared of me, boy.”

In response, Luke raises his fists.

“I’m willing to have a fight right here and now to see how tough Damon Penmayne really is,” he says. “See what he’s like without his bodyguards to protect his sorry ass.”

I turn back to Damon.

And I see him reaching for his black knife in his belt.

No, no, no.

The knife. That’s too much.

I know he could kill Luke. Hewouldkill Luke. He’s got that knife. He’s got the intent.

Damon is, after all, the most dangerous man I’ve ever met.

It’s up to me to stop him. Only me. Luke can’t do anything against a man like Damon.

And then, without thinking, I’m running toward Damon, my hands desperately pushing to keep his razor-sharp knife away. To not cause any more pain or trouble.

No killing, no killing.

No violence.
