“You don’t have to...dodates when you’re someone like me,” I reply. “I’m not exactly theboyfriend typegirls are looking for.”

“Ah, so you’re the one-night-stand kind of bad boy?” Ava asks with a wink.

“You could put it in words like that,” I say.

“Well, how about I take you on your first surprise date, then? I mean, it’s not much of a surprise or anything. I just want to take you to somewhere I really love.”

“And what’s that?” I ask.

Ava points across the road from us. “The Oak coffee shop, where they have the best almond croissants in the world.”

“You know,” I say, “I’ve never been there before.”

Ava’s mouth drops.

“You’ve never been in The Oak?” she asks, incredulous. “But you grew up here? How could you never even go there at least once? You must be crazy.”

I shrug.

“Yeah, I must be crazy, I suppose.”

“Okay, well, now you’redefinitelyhaving an almond croissant.”

She eagerly takes me inside the coffee shop with all the enthusiasm of an excitable puppy. She practically pushes me through the front door and orders croissants and coffee before we’re even inside and purchases them despite my protests.

“I am paying for this,” she tells me sternly. “I am paying for you to have the best almond croissant in the world.”

“I’m guessing you like these, then?” I ask her as we take our seats in the coffee shop.

“Ilovethem,” the girl replies enthusiastically.

I take a bite of the pastry. Ava watches me intently.

“You’ve got such a stern face as you eat that,” she remarks.

That makes me laugh. “It’s a good croissant. I guess I make stern faces when I’m enjoying something.”

“Would you say it’s the best almond croissant in the world?” she asks.

“We’ll have to see,” I reply.

Ava blushes and drinks her coffee.

“I like it when you laugh,” she whispers. “You don’t do it enough.”

“You make me laugh, Ava,” I say. “Not many people can claim that.”

What the fuck is going on with me? Am I really falling for a girl? Am I actually fucking happy?

We finish the croissants and the coffee. Ava was right: it is pretty damn good here.

“Okay, now that you’ve taken me somewhere,” I say to her, “it’s my turn to take you somewhere.”

“Oh, where?” she asks.

I smile.

“New York.”
