The lines on his face...
He has aged a decade in a week.
“What’s the worst thing that can happen?” I ask him softly, breaking the silence.
My dad finally glances up from the table and looks me in the eye for the first time in days. He gives me a look that means one thing.
They will kill him. That’sthe worst thing that can happen.
It’s all so very real...
Okay, that’s it. I’m done with this.
He doesn’t say a word as I stare back at him and finally decide what I am going to do.
“I’m going to New York to see Damon Penmayne,” I say bluntly.
Dad blinks.
“No. Don’t.”
Like how he’s just looked at me, it’s the first time Dad’s spoken in days. And it’s with a fearful urgency.
But I’m not listening to him. There is a fire within me now. I know I have to be strong. For him.
“I’m going to go, and I’m going to hunt the man down, and I’m going to stop this craziness, Dad,” I say quietly. “I am sick and tired of not being able to sleep or eat or do anything other than stress out. I simply just want to go back to my normal life and forget about all this. Seeing Damon will be the only solution.”
“Please don’t go, Ava,” Dad mutters, a little moreforceful now. “Please don’t see that man. You don’t know who he is or what he’s capable of.”
He’s practically begging. I can see the fear in his eyes. He’s terrified of Damon Penmayne.
And I know I should be too.
“I’m going to do what it takes,” I reply. “I don’t care who this guy is or what he’s done or what he can do to me. I don’t care if he is the devil incarnate. I am going to see Damon Penmayne and I am going to make things right.”
I will do anything for my dad.
He stares at me. He knows me well enough to see when I’ve got my mind on something and when I will not budge. It’s just like my cheerleading; once my focus is set, then it is impossible to shift me even an inch.
I am going to do this. I am going to New York. I am going to see Damon Penmayne and I am going to hash out a solution to all of this.
And I am not going to leave that city until I get it sorted.
And so, I get up from the table and head straight upstairs to pack my bag.

THREE DAYS LATER
AVA
I blinkin total confusion at the gangster.
What. The. Hell.
“What did you just say?” I ask.
Standing in the middle of his fancy office, glaring at me, Damon Penmayne seems completely at ease.
