I shrug. “I want to see how your business works. I would love to sit in on one of your mysterious work meetings. I’d be totally silent, of course. You won’t hear a peep from me.Nada.”

Damon shakes his head.

“I don’t want you to see this. Sorry, Ava. I can’t have you coming with me to witness my work.”

“Oh, I think I will,” I retort. “What type of meeting is it? Where is it? You’re not going to leave me here on myown, are you? That would be soungentlemanlyof you, Damon.”

Damon turns to Jim, who remains stoic. Good for him. He doesn’t want to get involved between us.

“It’s... at an art gallery opening downtown,” Damon explains. “Unusual place for a meeting, I know.”

Oh. I can definitely latch onto this.

“An art gallery opening?” I ask. “With the celebrities and everything?”

Damon seems perplexed at my question. “Yes, there’ll be celebrities there.”

“Fantastic,” I reply, beaming. “I’d love to go. I’ve never been to an art gallery opening or a film premiere, but it’s been there on top of my bucket list. I’ll come for sure then. What a great idea, Damon.”

“No,” he replies firmly.

“Please, Damon. I’d love to come.”

“This is not your world, Ava.”

“I’ll have big strong you next to me,” I say. “I’m sure I’ll be perfectly fine.”

Damon looks at Jim. He looks back at me. He looks back at Jim.

And then he sighs.

“You really want to come, Ava?” he asks.

“Yes, Damon. I really want to come.”

He sighs again.

“I’m totally against this idea,” he says.

“Well, you no longer control me,” I reply, not budging. “Our little contract has been ripped up, remember? I want to come, so I’m coming.”

“Fuck. Let’s do it, then,” he says, resigned. “We’ll have to find you something nice to wear, though.”

“I don’t have anything for a nice art gallery opening,” I reply. “Nothing fancy enough for one of those.”

“What about the dress you were wearing last night?” he asks.

“Damon, a girl simply can’t wear the same dress two nights in a row,” I retort. I am loving how I’m making him squirm.

Damon sighs yet again.

“Maybe you need to go shopping,” he says.

“I’m glad you suggested that,” I reply with a wink. “I would never turn down the chance to have a little browse through the famous shops of New York.”

“Remember, though,” Damon says, “that this is all your idea. Not mine. You can’t blame me when everything goes to shit tonight. You got that, Ava?”

“I wouldn’t dare, Damon.”
