“He’s an exception. His men wouldn’t dare attack a Caruso family member.”

“I don’t believe you.”

I glare at her. “I don’t give a shit what you believe. We’re getting married. That way you’ll be safe from his hangers on while I deal with him.”

“With you?”

“Vincent Marconi.”

Suddenly, my phone rings. It’s Marco again with news. “We found the car, occupants have been dealt with.”

“Did they talk?”

“The sniper’s Vincent. Wanted to take her out. Wedding is booked. That’ll stop most of the trouble but how are you going to make sure he doesn’t go after your blushing bride?”

“Honeymoon out of the country.”

“Nice, perfect alibi while we whack Marconi.”

“Precisely.”

I hang up and turn back to Isabella, managing to resist smiling. “You look like you have a choice,” I say. “Just to be clear, you don’t.”

ISABELLA

Iwake up in a luxurious penthouse. The bedroom is bathed in morning light.

Modern art adorns the walls, sleek furniture sprawls across the room, and through the floor-to-ceiling windows, New York stretches out like a concrete jungle.

It’s beautiful, yet I can’t appreciate it. The moment I come to, I’m reliving the events of yesterday.

It was the same last night. Dominic dropped me off here and then left to do whatever mafia bosses do. All I could think of was how close I came to dying.

The shots, the other people falling, the blood. I couldn’t even drink to block it out. In the end, I climbed into the guest bed and read one of Dominic’s books until sleep finally overcame me.

My phone lies on the bedside table, a lifeline to the outside world. The battery died while we were running from the shooting. I get up and walk around the penthouse until I find a charger.

I plug it in, switch it on and dial Sarah. As soon as she answers, my words tumble out in a rush. “Sarah, it’s me.”

“Isabella? what’s happened?” Sarah’s voice is laced with concern. “I’ve been trying to call you. The shooting, were you anywhere near there?”

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my shaking hands. “They were aiming at me but they missed. Dominic saved me and brought me to his place. My phone died, I’m sorry.”

“Are you all right? You want to meet up somewhere?”

“He says I can’t leave. He’s locked me in. Said it was for my own safety. He says we have to get married, and he’s a mob boss.”

Her sharp intake of breath is audible. “You need to call the police. This is serious! He’s kidnapped you.”

“He told me not to bother.”

“And you listened? I know you had this stupid obsession with him but this is insane. Either you call the cops or I will.”

“I’ll call them now. I’m just still trying to make sense of everything.”

“Ring me back when you’ve done it. Be quick.” She hangs up.
