Ethan chuckles. “Looks like it’s our turn,” he says.

We step in front of a beautiful, tall, white pillar. The cameraman poses us perfectly. I feel a little stiff and plastic as we smile. Ethan was right. The goofy pose was way more fun.

A slow song begins to play and Ethan pulls me out under the dim lights. My blue princess dress swishes around my feet as Ethan leads me around the dance floor. I place my hand on his shoulder, as he takes my other hand in his. Ethan is a really good dancer. He spins and dips me and guides me gracefully around the room. I’ve never been good on my feet. Any guy who can make me feel graceful must be an expert.

As we glide along the dance floor, a girl I’ve never seen before says, “I love Pride and Prejudice!” as she and her date move past us. Ethan looks at me and we both laugh.

“Your video was pretty epic,” he says.

An upbeat song plays next. Ethan’s group of friends from the limo surround us and we all dance in a big circle. Someone grabs me from behind. I spin around to face Stephanie. I can’t believe the girl staring back at me is my best friend. Her dark hair is piled meticulously on her head. Her dress is deep purple with a black sheer layer over the top. She looks stunning. It takes a minute for my thoughts to process her being here.

“Oh my gosh, Steph,” I say, hugging her. “You look incredible!”

“You do, too,” she says. “I told you that dress would match his eyes.”

“I know, I know, you’re always right.” I grin. “I didn’t realize you were coming!” I say. “You told me prom wasn’t your thing.”

“I know,” Stephanie says, “but Adika talked me into it.”

As if on cue, Adika walks over and hands Stephanie a drink. She smiles at me.

“Hey, Emma,” she says.

“I knew it!” I shout, pointing at the two of them.

They both laugh. “Yeah, fine, you called it,” Stephanie says. “I tried to resist for as long as possible, but I just couldn’t deny my feelings anymore.”

“Oh please,” Adika says. “You practically begged me to be your date tonight.”

The two of them continue to tease each other, but I can see by the way they look at each other, that they’re vibing hard.

Ethan notices I’ve stopped dancing. He stands beside me and wraps his hand around my waist.

“Hey, Adika,” he says. “Hey, Stephanie.” Ethan gives them each a high-five. “What’s going on?”

“Oh, nothing,” I say gleefully. “Just that Stephanie is here with a pop.”

“What’s a pop?” Ethan asks, looking confused.

Stephanie and I share a smile. “Oh nothing,” I say. “It’s an inside joke.”

Ethan shrugs. “Hey Adika, can you show me where you found the drink?” he asks. “I’m dying of thirst.”

“Sure,” she says. They walk away leaving Stephanie and I alone.

Stephanie links her arm through mine. “Six months ago, I would have never believed the two of us would be at the prom,” she says.

“And both with pops for dates,” I add.

“Exactly!” Stephanie shakes her head and laughs. “What happened to us?” she exclaims, pretending to be horrified.

“I think we’re growing up,” I say, making a face.

“Bite your tongue,” Stephanie says.

“Are you happy?” I ask.

Stephanie’s whole face lights up and I can see it in her eyes when she catches sight of Adika again. “I’m very happy,” she says. She hugs me again. “Good luck,” she says. “Don’t tell Adika, but I think you deserve to be queen.”
