“Oh please,” Adika says. “You practically begged me to go with you.”

“You look absolutely stunning, by the way,” I say. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my best friend looking this elegant.

Stephanie smiles. “Thanks, you do, too. And I’m glad you chose Austin. I always thought the two of you were meant for each other.”

Austin comes up and wraps his arm around my waist. “Thanks,” he says. “I did, too.”

I look in his eyes and we exchange a smile.

Stephanie makes a gagging noise behind us. “Okay, that’s enough. Save that mushy stuff for your own private time.”

“Hey, do you guys want to join us for dinner?” Austin asks.

Stephanie looks to Adika and she nods.

“Is there room?” I ask, excitedly.

“Yeah,” Austin says. The hostess said it won’t be hard to turn our party from four into six.”

Once we’re seated, we order a large assortment of dishes. Then we pass the food around so everyone can try everything. I don’t remember the last time I laughed this hard. It doesn’t take long to see that Adika is perfect for Stephanie. It’s obvious they’re both smitten, and that makes my heart soar.

Throughout dinner, Austin always has a hand either rubbing my arm, or holding my hand, or resting on my leg beneath the table. Every time I glance at him, he’s watching me.

“What?” I ask.

“You’re just so beautiful,” he says.

My cheeks flush crimson.

“I still can’t believe how lucky I am that you’re here with me.”

I give his hand a squeeze.

Dylan points a finger in his mouth and makes a gagging sound. “You two are disgusting.”

“Look who’s talking,” I say, pointing a finger across the table at he and Tessa. “You’re the best, no you’re the best,” I mimic in a high-pitched voice.

We all laugh again. The waiter brings the bill on a small black tray, along with six fortune cookies. While the guys divide up the check, I pass the cookies around. I open mine and smile as I read it. My stomach flip flops with anticipation.

A dream you have will come true today.

Tessa sees me smiling and she calls across the table. “Read it out loud!”

I glance down at the small, white fortune. I wonder which one of my dreams is supposed to come true tonight. I glance at Austin. “Why don’t we all go around and read them?” I say.

“Okay. You first,” Tessa says.

I glance down again. “A dream you have will come true today,” I read aloud.

“Ohhh,” Stephanie coos. “Could it be the crown? Have you secretly been dreaming your whole life of being prom queen?”

“I bet you get home from the dance and find your acceptance letter to UC Berkeley,” Austin says.

“I bet Mom and Dad will not embarrass you at the dance. That would be a dream come true.”

I laugh. “Okay, someone else go.”

Austin holds his up. “If you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” He kisses my hand. “And I definitely have the best.”
