I move past her sneering face quickly. Nope, I was right the first time.

A couple people say hi as I make my way through the house. A lot of kids just look at me.

I hear a couple whispers of, “Is that vom queen?”

They probably all wonder what I’m doing here. Honestly, I’m not sure myself. I consider going back outside and waiting next to Dylan’s car until the party is over.

“Hey, Prom Queen!”

I snake my way around the living room. This is the most crowded room, as well as the source of the music. Kids are dancing in large groups together.

“Hey, Prom Queen!”

I step out of the living room and turn toward the dining room.

“Hey, Prom Queen!”

I finally turn. “Me?” I ask.

Ethan makes his way toward me. “Who else would I be talking to?” he asks.

“I don’t know, Taylor? Kylee? Adika?”

Ethan brushes it off. “Naw! They don’t stand a chance against you.”

I laugh. “And what makes you say that?”

“Because you’re actually nice.”

I smile. “Thanks.”

“Plus, you have all that extra attention from puking in the assembly.”

I cover my face with my hands. “I will never live that down.” I briefly consider fleeing from the party. How many miles did we drive to get here? I wonder if I can walk home.

Ethan pulls my hands down. “Don’t worry about it, girl. Any attention is good attention. People are talking about you, right?”

“Yeah, I guess,” I say.

“Whose name will be in the front of their minds when they’re standing there ready to vote? Taylor, Kylee, Adika, they’re all the same. How does anyone choose? But you…You stand out.”

I’m really surprised by Ethan’s words. He does have a point.

“Now come dance with me,” he says.

I put a hand up. “Oh, I’m not much of a dancer.”

“Yeah, right,” he says, grabbing my hand and pulling me into the crowd of teenagers. Ethan grips my hand as if he’s afraid I’ll run away. He must know me better than I thought.

He then lifts his arm and spins me underneath it. It catches me off guard and I laugh. Ethan laughs with me. Our voices together begin to draw a crowd. We’re soon surrounded by half a dozen kids in a semicircle. They start cheering for Ethan. His smile splits his face as he shows off his flossing skills. Then he begins doing the Renegade. His audience cheers appreciatively.

“Check this out, Boomer,” another guy yells to Ethan.

“My grandpa called, he wants his dance moves back,” a second shouts.

The two boys then drop to the floor and attempt some break-dancing moves.

Ethan laughs. Then he gets on the ground and joins them. The crowd around us is getting bigger now, and I find myself being shoved back. A row of students, three kids deep stand between myself and Ethan. He’s too busy entertaining his audience to notice.
