Me…a member of the family who was sued for Lara’s family’s loss.

I’m not sure I can add more information for most of these observed points from just one night in their house. This list could span a hundred different directions, but I think it should all connect somehow. The only thing I know for sure is that I am not a coincidence in their story.

Bruises are common among active children. Mermaids are a common fantasy among children. A whining dog might have no relevance to Friday night. They may not want the girls playing hide-and-seek because they live on a cliff over the ocean, and I didn’t see any sort of fence.

Lara’s family, the Hoyt family, were not wealthy thirteen years ago. Then Lara’s parents took my family for everything we were worth, blaming us for the fire and the death of one of their children. Dad thought he had the proper insurance to protect us if anything ever happened to any of the housing units, but he said the Hoyt family found a loophole, so Dad lost all his assets paying the lawsuit. Lara’s family has already taken everything from my family, and after that financial gain, it’s clear she lives the life of luxury.

My head bounces against the door as Willa knocks for the third time in an hour. “Haley, you can’t stay locked in there all night. Why won’t you come out?”

We only have one bathroom and I have a suitable bedroom to lock myself in, but I needed a more confined space and whitenoise. I close my notebook and pinch it under my arm before standing up and unlocking the door. “I’m sorry,” I tell her, avoiding eye contact.

“What can I do to help you?” she offers.

“I wish there was something. I appreciate you asking me,” I say.
