Thunk.

My eyes jerked open.

The thud had been loud and sudden, enough to wake me.

A bird against my window?

I didn’t like thuds.

Birds or otherwise.

Flipping on the bedside light, I grabbed my phone as I sat up in bed, swinging my legs off the side.

After I’d exorcised a small portion of my daily demons on Cletus’s man still alive and suffering in the undercrofts, I’d tossed about in a fitful slumber for most of the night. Blood and gore usually sated me enough to drift off, but even that hadn’t helped me sleep. Nothing had helped me sleep since I’d found Ada and brought her back to Netherstone.

Naked, but not bothering to put on boxers, my stare stayed on the bright caustic light of my phone and I swiped directly to the camera feed in Ada’s bedroom.

Hell. Empty bed. Rumpled sheets.

Flipping through the security feeds that I’d had installed during the reconstruction of the castle into every hallway, every room, every vantage point both inside and out of the castle, I looked for motion.

I stopped at the feed from just outside of her room and sent it back.

Ten minutes ago. Nothing.

Further back. Twenty minutes ago.

There.

Shit.

Her door opening. Her body flopping into the hallway. Crawling. Crawling at a snail’s pace across the floorboards, an inch at a time. In just a T-shirt and underwear. Crawling.

She got to the corner of the hallway where her room was located and disappeared.

“Fucking hell,” I muttered under my breath.

My fingers fast, I pulled up the feed of the next hallway.

More crawling. Crawling even slower. Down onto her belly. Pathetic crawling, scratching for every inch. Another corner. Crawling.

There. My door.

She fell against the thick wood. Collapsing.

It’d taken her twenty fucking minutes to crawl to my room.

Dropping my phone, I was to my door in an instant, yanking it open.

My chest shredding into a million tiny threads in one breath.

Ada curled on the floor. Not moving.

I dropped to my knees, my hands shaking as I reached out to touch her.

One hand on her shoulder. “Ada.”
