Cletus’s men had strapped me to it the moment they’d entered this chamber, stripping the sheet and comforter off of me and slamming me back against the cold metal cross.

They hadn’t taken any chances—they’d kept me shackled with the steel they’d used on me in the hotel room until I was clamped tight onto the large steel upright X attached to the wall behind it.

Spread eagle. The sheet from the hotel now just barely hanging on my body.

But that fact barely registered in my brain, as my eyes went frantic around the room, looking for a way to escape. Planning for the moment I was out of these shackles.

The crumbling stones of the walls, floor, and arched ceiling around me told me I was probably subterranean in some old part of the city. I could tell by the stops and starts of the van moving through the streets that we’d entered a busy part of Athens. And this was a sex dungeon of some sort—or maybe just a regular old torture chamber.

It was hard to tell sometimes these days.

Whips of all varieties and lengths were hung on hooks to my right. Several antiseptic, shiny stainless-steel cabinets to my left held heaven knows what. A matching stainless steel gurney table sat in the middle of the room with metal shackles hanging off the edges.

Someone liked clean surfaces. Not the slightest fleck of dirt dared to mar any of the stainless steel and it leant a cool, clinical feel to the room. Yet there was no cleaning out the blood that had soaked deep into the dingy beige bricks around me, staining them forever. Old or new blood, there was no telling.

My right arm twisted as I tried to worm my hand out of the shackle while attempting to keep my breathing under control.

I couldn’t panic. Not yet.

I had to keep threads of my sanity in place until I couldn’t. Until they were forced out of me.

The shackle on my right arm was brutally tight, locking me in place against the cross. If I wasn’t careful with my weight on the tips of my toes that managed to reach the floor beyond the shackles that bound my ankles to the X, I would dislocate my shoulders soon enough.

Cletus closed the door directly across from me after he’d ushered his men out.

He’d draped one of the sheets over my naked body as they’d strapped me to the cross, his look snarling at his men when their eyes veered onto my naked skin because I was fighting their holds so viciously that the sheet kept slipping off my body. Modesty didn’t exist for me in this instance. Not when I needed to fight like a hellcat to get out of here.

Cletus didn’t like others looking at his property. And I had no doubt that in his mind, I was one hundred percent his property.

Fucking demon bastard.

Cletus turned to me, his small, beady eyes focused on the sheet draped over my body as he approached me.

New tactic. If I could get him to talk to me, trust me, maybe he would let just one of my arms free for my comfort.

One arm was all I needed to snap his neck. Grab him and tear out his throat with my teeth.

I lowered my lashes, attempting to look submissive while the need to spit in his face burned hot in my chest. “Why—why are you doing this to me?”

His look shot up from the sheet to my face. “Because you are my queen.”

My head would have snapped back hard onto the horizontal bar the cross was adhered to if my body wasn’t already stretched to the limit. “What?”

“You are my queen. How could you not know that after all the time we spent together those many years ago?”

I was his fucking queen? How fucking crazy was this Folotto?

My tongue curled, as what he did in the parking garage as they shoved me into that van hit me with clarity. Kissing—tonguing my forehead. I had been struggling, trying to break free, so I really wasn’t paying attention to what he was doing. But he wasn’t trying to inflict pain. He was fucking making out with my forehead.

Dread like I’d never known it snaked deep into my bones, freezing me from the inside out.

Cletus stopped in front of me, his fingers curling into the sheet. “We are the same, you and I.”

My look narrowed at him. “The same?”

“Yes. You never figured it out? I thought you were smarter than that. Of course, I did take bits of your brain last time that might have been helpful in that regard.”

I glared at him, silent.
