He gestured with his hand calmly as if telling her to continue speaking, and she did.

"I was wondering what happened to that jewelry store. I tried to buy something. I wanted to talk to the girl who works there, Corey. Do you know how I can get in touch with her?" Ellen gained confidence as she spoke because Owen was nodding, encouraging her that she was on the right track.

Chapter 12

Owen

Ellen spoke to John Coleman on the phone, and it was on speaker phone, so Owen and Paul could hear everything he said on the other end.

"They're closing that shop," John said. "You can just order their jewelry online. They're shipping from their house."

Owen gestured with his hand to his ear in the shape of a phone, and Ellen said, "Is there any way I could talk to Corey? Can I call her?"

Owen nodded, encouraging her.

"Yeah, she's actually between phones right now. I think she lost hers. I could give your number to her mom. She's the owner."

"John, hey, this is Paul. Hey, I'm here with my wife, and she was worried about that young lady. We were just talking about it. She had already paid for a piece of jewelry, and the girl at the store didn’t deliver it earlier this week when she promised."

"Oh, she ordered something?"

"Yeah, and Ellen said she had been trustworthy in the past. She promised to deliver that necklace days ago. Ellen just wanted to make sure something hadn't happened to her."

Ellen and Paul both looked at each other with wide eyes, disbelieving the fact that Owen could sound exactly like Paul. Paul hadn't said a word. That was Owen the whole time. Owen had been acting for years, and was used to imitating people, and he kept his eyes trained away from their reaction so he could focus.

"She's, yeah, Paul, she's hurt. I think maybe she sprained her foot. I'm not sure, but that's probably why she hadn't delivered your wife's necklace. I'll get a message to her mom about it, and tell her to call you."

"Okay, I would appreciate it since it was a birthday gift," Owen said, pretending to be Paul again even though he wanted to jump through the phone.

He didn't like this guy John. He could tell he was hiding something. He thanked him in spite of his own feelings and hung up the phone. He stared at Paul who was smiling and still unable to believe the impression.

"You sounded just like him," Ellen said.

"That was great. But isn't Corey going to tell John I didn't order a necklace?"

"I'm not worried about that. I don't think John's actually going to tell her about the necklace. I don't trust him. I think he's hiding something."

"What do you think he's hiding?" Ellen asked, looking interested.

Just then, her next customer came inside.

"Do you mind going by their house with me for a minute?" Owen asked Paul as Ellen greeted the customer.

"You two go ahead. I'm going to take care of Jayden and I have one more to do. I'll be here when you get back."

The two gentlemen started to leave.

"Be careful!" she called as they walked out.

Paul started talking as soon as the door closed behind them.

"If I remember right, that property out behind the church is posted. No trespassing. I've seen the signs."

"Does that mean you can't go knock on someone's door?"

"Yyyep."

Owen gave him a disbelieving look as they walked. "Seriously? We can't knock on their door? Like a salesman? Do we need to have the cops with us to go out there?"
