The man walks around the table, his pace slow and careful. The feeling of fight or flight in my body grows stronger with each of his steps. I shift my weight slightly and wonder if there is still a chance to escape.

One of the chairs scrapes on the floor as it is pushed back. My heart leaps into my throat and threatens to choke me as the man’s feet stop in front of me. As his masked face comes into view, my blood freezes in my veins. When the intruder raises his gun and points it at my head, I know I’m out of options.

This is it. This is the end.

Chapter 16 - Ivan

The business meeting ends shortly after midnight. It lasted twice as long as it should have. I can hardly wait to get home and crawl into bed next to Sophia. She'll most likely be asleep by the time I get back to the farmhouse.

I could wake her up by kissing my way up her body before burying my face between her legs and tasting her sweetness.

A warm flood of invigorating energy comes over me and desire pulls at my belly just thinking about my wife. My cock stiffens, I press my palm against my crotch and tug on the fabric of my pants as I walk to the door of the warehouse to steady my erection. Everyone else has already left, but I take a moment to look at my phone. The goodnight message from Sophia that was there only makes me want to get home faster.

As I push open the door, it's pouring rain. It thunders as my guard approaches with an umbrella. I nod to him step under the umbrella and walk with him to the car.

“Good meeting, sir?” my bodyguard asks as I turn the key in the ignition. I smile and run my hands over the wheel as the engine roars to life.

“It went as well as could be expected. I would have preferred for it to happen tomorrow after I had time to think over the stakes, but things happen for a reason.”

My phone starts ringing as I put the car in drive. With a sigh, I hit the button on the steering wheel that connects my phone to the speaker system.

“What is it?” I ask with clear irritation in my voice. I want this day to be over and I want to go home to my wife. I don’t want to waste any more time on the phone talking to people about things that don’t matter at the moment.

The man on the other end of the call coughs and sputters. “There’s been an attack on the farmhouse.”

“What the fuck.” I slam my foot down on the accelerator, and my stomach churns. “Where is Sophia?”

“We couldn’t stop him before he got inside. Miss Sophia is ... somewhere in the house.”

I feel like I’m going to throw up as I weave through the cars driving through the city. “Who the hell is with her?”

“No one.” The man groans and a shuffling can be heard in the background, as if he is dragging himself across a wet floor. “She was inside, and we thought she was asleep. You ordered us to stay outside unless something happened. The man came out of nowhere too fast. We didn’t see him coming.”

“If she dies, it’s your fucking head. I’ll fucking kill you myself if anything happens to my wife.”

I end the call and drive faster, leaving the city behind and navigating the windy roads of the hills. My knuckles are white as I grip the wheel. The car of my men following us struggles to keep up as I speed toward the house.

I have to get there. I must make sure that Sophia is safe.

My blood boils as the driveway comes into view. The guard already has his gun drawn, ready for what's about to happen. I come to a screeching halt in front of the porch.

I flex my hands before jumping out of the car with my gun drawn and ready. My mouth goes dry as the second car pulls up and the two other guards jump out.

I fear no one and nothing but the thought of my woman being hurt.

One heads to the bodies on the ground, helping the men who are injured while the other one follows me and my bodyguard up the front steps. I don’t spare a glance at the men on the ground.

They failed to protect my wife.

I lead the way into the house, clenching the gun and moving slowly. One of the men whistles softly. When I look over at him, he points to some drops of blood on the floor.

My heart plummets to my feet. Bile rises in my throat as I walk deeper into the house and head for the kitchen. There’s a trail of blood on the floor, more than I was prepared to see, leading down the hall to my office. I take careful steps, not wanting the floorboards to creak without knowing what’s waiting for me.

Please let her be alive. I can’t lose her.

My heart races and I hold my breath as I try to turn the doorknob, but it won’t budge. I take a step back and push my foot as hard as I can against the door, right next to the knob. The door bends slightly, but it won’t open. Anger flows through me and I kick the door again with all my strength.

The door flies open with a loud crack. I had expected to see Sophia on the floor, bleeding to death, when I saw a larger pool of blood. Instead, I stare down the barrel of a gun.
